A song I sang to the Yantra River, one early spring morning, in the old, old town of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. I made a mandala With every colour Day after day after night Sand I brang in fine design Perfectly the dragon So beautiful the walls Around this garden labyrinth of gold The difference between Me and the monks is that I thought it was a keeper Catch me up on release Catch me up on letting go Help me gather the pieces And give them to the river flow Tui Mamaki - 2015

Parks are built, grass is mown, trees are planted and paths laid. Neat green and grey, rounded, curved, convened and contracted. Hired out for our convenience, imported and overlaid for a respite from hard tarmac. Swathes of even colour fill our vision, stacked and trimmed, just right. A card arrives, from the mountains. Glacier blue, almost within reach. Peaks tilting up, sunny and snowy, glinting in the pure, clear light. Above us a canopy of the purest blue stretches up, up, a deepening blue cranes our necks, velvet richness coats our eyes. An investigation into nature's convenience and visual simplification in food packaging. Composition created as a sand mandala.

I saw the Dalai Lama do this years ago in Victoria, BC. It took 4 monks two weeks to build this gorgeous sand mandala. Not only was it one of the most beautiful art I had ever seen but also one of my seminal life lessons...clip is from "Samsara"...

The Hammer Museum, in partnership with Ari Bhod --- the American Foundation for Tibetan Cultural Preservation --- is pleased to present The Mandala Project. This two-week program will feature the construction of a Tibetan sand mandala by a team of traditionally trained Lamas visiting Los Angeles from the Thubten Choeling Monastery in Pharping, Nepal. The mandala they create will be a sacred painting, following precise and ancient instructions passed down over thousands of years. Millions of grains of colored sand will be sprinkled carefully on a flat surface over an elaborate 10-day ceremony. Come to the Hammer to watch them during the creation process, October 26-November 7, 2010.
