Using stiffness optimization as an approach in concept design stage to develop a more complete structural form as opposed to the typical beam and slab configuration. The project is a humble maintenance facility but outside a signature museum. This is the concept design stage where the architect was looking for more inspirational approaches to the roof form. The volumetric and fluid nature of concrete allows us to redistribute material across the solid space. Note how depth reductions occur at low bending moment locations defined by end fixity. Formwork can be digitally fabricated in a cost-effective manner using methods we developed on Banq restaurant, Boston Harbor Island Pavilion, and Miami Science Museum. Architect: Sasaki Associates Software: Rhino, Grasshopper, Millipede, and in-house scripting.

Through a virtual design and construction process, Cutler and Sasaki were able to detect and resolve design issues prior to the work being done in the field. The plumbing and electrical subcontractors quickly realized the benefits. The value to the owner is a savings in both time and cost.
