Those who follow my stuff may be familiar with my SBG project - which is aimed at getting great ( or at least "acceptable" ) video from cheapy point and shoot cameras. Most of the time these cameras behave. But as the lack things like fixed focus, aperture priority, and so on, you have to trust the camera and hope for the best. This video is an example of when things go horribly wrong. But I like the look of it, even though the camera went all Mr. Magoo. Camera manufcturers, listent up, two words: infinity focus!

Here is the original video http://www.vimeo.com/4111215 constructed from 11MP stills. THIS video is a 100% crop from the original. We can use SBG to do a 3x zoom / pan / scan in post using the original source pixels, no digital zoom, no interpolation. The advanced resampling capabilities allows a 2-3x zoom in post withouth it looking terrible. All from a $100 pocketable digital camera. This was shot with a S100fs, which suffers somewhat from CA on the wide end, and this crop was from the bottom portion of the frame, so some of the softness in this is due to pushing the camera somewhat beyond it limits.

C:\FFMPEG>C:\FFMPEG\ffmpeg.exe -y -i "C:\TL_1\%06d.JPG" -vcodec mpeg2video -dein terlace -r 29.97 -bug +autodetect+ms -sameq -an -f avi "C:\Temp\minrate_sameq.avi" Oh, its a sunset. I'm trying to get SBG to properly invoke ffmpeg to take stills and squish them into a decent video format.

This is a 5x digital push using a spline based resize algorithm. Note the lack of fat pixels and other standard resize artifacts or over sharpening. The subject is distant slightly out of focus lights far off on the horizon.

This is a test for an eventual, and hopefully better controlled, more polished series. Still its interesting. Here is the science: Certain salts are hygroscopic, they will absorb water vapor from the air. Many salts are hygroscopic. A few are so good at pulling water out of the air that they will actually dissolve in this water and form a solution. The solutions themselves will continue absorbing water until equillibrium is achieved. The subject of this video is Calcium Chloride, typically used as an ice melting agent or as a humectant on dusty roads. Its comes in round BB sized balls called "prills." CaCl2 is so efficient at absorbing water that at 90% relative humidity, it can absorb as much as 9x its weight is water! In the video you see the initial "boring" phase where the dry prills are absorbing moisture and re-hydrating. Once the surface of the prills is hydrated they start to deliquesce, weeping a concentrated solution of the salt and water pulled from the air. The solution itself continues to pull moisture from the air as the prills dissolve. In this video the RH was about 65%.

This is movie by my son, RJ ( 7 years old ). He is telling me type: "I made a movie. It is funny. I took the pictures. I am cool. And I mean it. It is a movie about Legos, they are my favorite toy. It took 160 pictures and it took an hour. And it was kind of boring. And I like how it came out. Remember these special things, and I meant it, and watch my video. Thank you for watching my video! And I mean it. Bye! Bye!" -- RJ Well, he's already talking like a Hollywood director... perhaps the rest will follow as he matures. "Hey! What are you saying!" -- RJ Nothing, nothing at all.
