Steve Koffman may have a spring in his step now- but it wasn’t always that way. A few years back he suffered a severe ankle injury- damaging both ligaments and tendons playing racquetball. “I should have stayed off it completely. Contrary to medical advice given to me, I didn’t,” says Koffman. And he paid the price. His severe sprain spiraled into something more serious. “When you have ankle weakness for the average sedentary person it doesn’t really bother them. Their body can compensate. But if they’re a little bit more athletic or trying to do some workouts you’re always at risk for twisting it again,” says Dr. Andrew Belis, who is a foot and ankle surgeon on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. In Steve’s case, his unstable ankle triggered a bone spur. Hoping to avoid major surgery, he opted for the arthroscopic approach. “Which means a little camera into the ankle with instrumentation to be able to repair the ligament through two small punched incisions. And that technique allows for less dissection, less openness and quicker healing time,” says Dr. Belis. Getting arthroscopy to the ankle was years in the making. A small work space, it requires a tinier camera and tools. This procedure is helping patients with cartilage damage, bone spurs or scar tissue, and pain in back of the ankle. “We’re able to push the envelope and get them back to activity a little bit quicker. So it makes it a very exciting time to have this new procedure at our fingertips,” says Dr. Belis. “I was extremely compliant this time, I think I learned my lesson there. I’m still able to play the sports I enjoy,” says Koffman. Taking a leap of faith, Steve is on the mend, and back in the swing of things.
