Frank Lancaster, Structural Technical Director at EYP, describes the engineering solutions designed to mitigate vibrations in the Loyola Science Center. Challenged by the presence of abandoned coal mine shafts beneath the building and a set of train tracks less than 100 feet away, the design team had to design a structure to prevent damage from a sinkhole and disruptive vibrations from trains passing by.

With over 213,000 square feet of space the Loyola Science Center facilitates “effective, intellectual, collisions”, strategically juxtaposing faculty offices, classrooms, laboratories, and study/lounges unite Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering. The University of Scranton's goal was to provide students with an environment that would encourage learning and discovery, specifically in the STEM fields. This building does just that. A new atrium at the heart of the facility encourages interaction among the sciences while linking them with the Campus Commons and the DeNaples Center and Green.

A working committee at Wheaton College - including representatives of each science discipline, administrators, students, operations staff, the facilities department and trustees - was actively engaged throughout the process in review, critique, and development of design options through on-site charrettes. In addition, a geology professor worked with the College and design team to determine the type and placement of boulders in the sunken courtyard to create a geological teaching tool specific to the Norton, MA campus and the New England region.
