Armored combat is a combat sport developed by the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) in which participants in body armor act out mock combats loosely inspired by forms of historical combat practiced in medieval Europe. It is considered a combat sport, contact sport, or a form of martial art by those who participate. The participants use armor and weapons specified by SCA standards and rules, the weapons are made from rattan (a form of hard-wood) rather than steel for added safety, and all major vital points of the body must be covered by armor. The fighting is a full-speed, near full-force, full-contact competition between two or more combatants, and it is designed to resemble medieval combat dueling of up to 2000 participants. While SCA's armored combat is a relatively new sport compared to other, the first tournaments were held nearly 50 years ago in the mid 1960s. It has now evolved into a large worldwide combat form with thousands of active participants in Canada, The United States, Germany, Austria, Finland, Netherlands, France, Ireland, Japan, Spain, Sweden, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. I had the opportunity to experience some demonstrations they had this year at San Diego's Comic-Con by two of the SCA's chapters: The Kingdom of Terre Neuve, as well as The Kingdom of Caid, and put together a video. Enjoy! Gear Used: - Panasonic GH4 in Cine D - Sigma 18-35 F1.8 w/ Metabones EF to MFT Speedbooser - Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 w/ MC14 1.4x Teleconverter
