1. Manatee fun in Crystal River

from Liquid Productions, Inc. / Added

This is some video I edited from a recent snorkel trip to Crystal River Florida. These are just some short clips I edited together for a Dive Club Presentation, i'm working on a longer piece with narration. Manatees are gentle giants that migrate up into the warm clear springs in the winter time when the ocean temperatures drop below 65 degrees. They are an endangered species with only about 3000 remaining. Crystal river is one of the only places you can swim with them and touch them. Its an amazing experience to be in the water with such large graceful creatures! Enjoy the video!

The dugong is a quiet animal with no defences, except its impressive size. Certain individuals can reach 4 meters long with a weigh up to 900 kg. The Egyptian dugong is usually up to 2.50m-3m and up to 500kg. It generally lives alone or in small groups and frequents open water coastal habitats. They may also live in wide shallow mangrove channels and in the lee of large inshore islands. Dugongs are also regularly observed in deeper water further offshore in areas where the continental shelf is wide, shallow and protected. Dugong is the only marine mammal to feed on zoster’s (marine plants) living on sandy shallow bottoms. Sirenian are sometimes called “sea cows”. To breathe, the dugong has to surface. Its apneas owed long minutes. When it inhales, it emits a relatively noisy kind of “phaaa” sound. To communicate, Sirenian emits small shouts. We still ignore how they do, as dugongs have no vocal cords. Dugongs make chirp and bark-like sounds, in mother-calf communication and during mating. It is believed that infrasound, which is sound below the human hearing limits, is also used.

Footage from 1999. It is worth the trip to Monkey Mia, Western Australia to experience the daily beach visit by a pod of wild bottlenose dolphins. Any tour of the tranquil bay to see the sea life is also worth the trip on its own. We had amazing luck on our three hour tour. We ended up having the $1M catamaran to ourselves. Our tour found dolphins for the first time in a week - at least two pods visited us. And to top that, we had the treat of seeing a Dugong with calf. To think I almost chose not to "waste" $25 on what turned out to be one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had... One one beach we were finding a bunch of small shells in great condition. After a while someone noticed their bag of shells was moving. Turned out that all of the good shells had tiny crazy crabs in them! Music: "Book of Days" Enya

This video is my “felíz cupleaños” to Lucas Schoeder per my sister's request. Borrowing from the comedy Jim Gaffigan, it contains an interpretive reading of the children's book Mary Manatee: A Tale of Sea Cows. Bonus features include the original song “My Beard is Beautiful” during the credits.
