Joshua Clover is the author of two books of poetry and two of cultural history and theory:The Matrix (British Film Institute, 2005) and 1989: Bob Dylan Didn't Have This to Sing About (University of California, 2009). His new book of poetry, Red Epic, is forthcoming from Commune Editions (spring 2015) and a book on the political economy of struggle, Of Riot, will be published by Verso in spring 2016. His column "Pop & Circumstance" appears monthly in The Nation. He has won yearlong fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Fine Arts Work Center, and the Cornell Society for the Humanities. He is a professor of English at the University of California, Davis; in spring, he will convene a Residential Research Group on culture and finance capital at the University of California Humanities Research Institute. A collaboration with BAM/PFA for MATRIX 257, The Secession Sessions is an exhibition and series of related public programs exploring a place caught in a contested narrative--the disputed region of Abkhazia, located along the eastern shores of the Black Sea. Consisting of a new film, Letters to Max (2014); a pseudo, unofficial embassy ("Anembassy") for Abkhazia staffed by the former foreign minister of Abkhazia, Maxim Gvinjia (also the star of the film); and a program of conversations and public events, The Secession Sessions invites visitors to investigate the question of statehood and representation through the prism of the stateless state of Abkhazia. Baudelaire establishes an open space for discourse and contemplation, while acknowledging both sides of the politically fraught situation. This conversation was hosted by Karen Fiss, professor of visual studies at California College of the Arts. Maxim Gvinjia, the former foreign minister of Abkhazia was present on skype from Moscow, Russia. A collaboration with BAM/PFA for MATRIX 257, The Secession Sessions is an exhibition and series of related public programs exploring a place caught in a contested narrative--the disputed region of Abkhazia, located along the eastern shores of the Black Sea. Baudelaire establishes an open space for discourse and contemplation, while acknowledging both sides of the politically fraught situation. Abkhazia is something of a paradox: a country that exists, in the physical sense of the word (a territory with borders, a government, a flag and a language), yet it has no legal existence because for almost twenty years it was not recognized by any other nation state. And so Abkhazia exists without existing, caught in a liminal space, a space in between realities. "Artists and Poets" at SECESSION is Ugo Rondinone’s third exhibition dedicated to a wide-ranging exploration of the relationship between visual art and lyric poetry and the articulation of his conviction that the arts possess a spiritual and transcendental power. Rondinone firmly believes that creativity, whether it takes the form of a poem, a sculpture, or a painting, can affect us deeply. Rondinone postulates that works of art—like poems—can be understood through feeling, intuitively, and require no prepackaged interpretation "any explanation will reduce the poem and the artwork to the sayable, and every poem and artwork holds what is essentially unsayable." His emphasis is on the showing of art, each artist is represented by a sizable ensemble of works, and the placement of the art in pairs encourages dialogue between the oeuvres and a larger conversation throughout the exhibition. February 12 – April 12, 2015. With works by Justin Matherly, Bob Law, Michaela Eichwald, Giorgio Griffa, Fritz Panzer, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Heimo Zobernig, Donald Evans, Andra Ursuta, Michael Williams, Fritz Hartlauer, Tamuna Sirbiladze, Andrew Lord, Gustav Klimt, and John Giorno. Dial-A-Poem is an installation by the American performance artist and poet John Giorno in collaboration with the Vienna Poetry School. Visitors may listen to thirty poems by Austrian writers in Secession’s Grafisches Kabinett or by calling the Vienna landline number +43 (0)1 58 50 433. Poems by: H.C. Artmann, Ingeborg Bachmann, Christoph W. Bauer, Wolfgang Bauer, Jürgen Berlakovich, Ann Cotten, Franz Josef Czernin, elffriede.aufzeichnensysteme, Franzobel, Martin Fritz, Elfriede Gerstl, Maja Haderlap, Bodo Hell, Christian Ide Hintze, Christine Huber,Zuzana Husárová, Ernst Jandl, Christian Loidl, Friederike Mayröcker,Heidi Pataki, Judith Nika Pfeifer, Rosa Pock, Reinhard Priessnitz,Sophie Reyer, Gerhard Rühm,Gerhard Ruiss,Robert Schindel,Ferdinand Schmatz, Liesl Ujvary, Hubert Weinheimer.
