Thankfully there are some people who are wise enough to create seed banks for the future. The concept of survival seed bank just seems so vital. In fact, chances are pretty strong there will be circumstances that will make us fall back on seed vault. By using the principle of seeds heirloom, through the propagation of such seed banks, it will be possible to ensure that the human race doesn’t get wiped away!

Developed by Mr. Cary Fowler of the Global Crop Diversity Trust and constructed 390 feet into the core of a permafrost mountain, the vault is intended to stay secure for thousands of years. It's singular goal: to protect biodiversity for the future of agriculture in the face of today's unprecedented climate change and social strife. Steve Rowell "In the Best of All Possible Worlds" 2011, 5 minutes 52 seconds, USA and Norway, English, 16:9, 1080p video with stereo sound Collection: The Long Now Foundation A short video from a larger research project “The Cold Coast Archive”, in collaboration with artists Signe Lidén and Annesofie Norn. Both this video and the collaborative project use the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV) as a starting point for investigations into and extrapolations from the broader meaning of a remote landscape of contingency and preparedness. Built to withstand catastrophe, the SGSV is the most robust food-crop seed vault on Earth, buried in a frozen mountainside, on the arctic island of Spitsbergen. It was opened in 2008 and is currently hosting seeds from nearly every nation on Earth. Deep time, Disaster planning, Geopolitical speculation, and climate prediction, are recurring themes for both the place and the project. Spitsbergen is part of the Svalbard Archipelago, in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. It is one of the most remote and pristine places on Earth. Video: Filmed in February 2011, during the first week of sunlight for that year. Audio: Field recordings made inside the vault and at various mountaintops and fjords around Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen. Voice: Professor Roland von Bothmer, Public Relations Officer for the SGSV (recorded inside the vault by Signe Lidén during a August 2011 interview). from Steve Rowell Added

An audio slideshow created for a performance curated by the Long Now Foundation at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, in San Francisco, on the theme of "Quiet" on May 28, 2011. The photographs and video clips are sequenced around a sound piece I assembled from field recordings from a February 2011 trip I took with Alexander Rose, of the Long Now Foundation, to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. This incidental soundtrack included natural and man-made sound both inside and outside the vault, across a remote arctic landscape. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, high in the Arctic, stores the world's largest collection of crop seeds in a location chosen to survive the worst-case scenarios of climate change and global catastrophe. It is an exemplary site of extreme duration, infrastructure, sustainability – a potential 'restart' for society, and life, on Earth. This theme-specific performance at the YBCA is part of a larger research and extrapolative project based on fieldwork and interventions on Spitsbergen Island, part of the Svalbard Archipelago, by myself and collaborating artists: Annesofie Norn (Berlin) and Signe Lidén (Bergen). An intermission piece featured ambience (again incidental) of the supersonic airspace of the Mojave desert – the sounds between the sonic booms – from my Sonic Boom Archive project (2005-07) that consisted of an 18-month autonomous recording session of the most active boomscape in the world, the R-2508 airspace.
