Flocks of gulls appeared as from nowhere along with the dramatic change of the weather. After more than one month of frost, the first day of year was mild and rainy. The ices, that are not good at all from the beginning, will be dangerous weak if this lasts for many days. The first section is shot 29/12 and the rest 1/1. And that's me in the blue scooter;) By Jan Eerala, Makholma Finland.

A winter storm 26/12/2011 with wind speeds up to 30 m/s made a lot of damage in southern Finland. And the exceptional warm weather seems to continue. Three big trees come down but luckily not on the house. One fir was only ten feets away. The seawater rised about 5 feets, which is enormous here. A lot of docks and holiday huts got swamped. At 13 pm 26/4 Makholma Bay was covered with ice as long as could be seen. Only two hours later the whole bay was ice free. A Northeasterly breeze took all the ice out on the Bothnian Sea. Only ices on between reefs and on ground places stayed left. And the first boat trip with old motor was not fully trouble free;) Boating for www.rupuranta.net by Jan Eerala, Makholma Finland. (Shot with Canon 550 D and the cheapest kit lens.)

Fisherman Kari Malen is the last professional fisherman in Makholma. Hes statement here is, that there's no future for fishing anymore, as there will only be small fish like smelt left in the Bothnian Sea. But the gulls like. Filmed on a (rare) sunny and calm day with a temp of -20 C by Jan Eerala, Makholma Finland. (Done with Canon 5D mk2 and 550D. Original camera sound only)
