    • Barbara Nitke: American Ecstasy

      14:19

from The Lost Lectures / Added

Barbara is a photographer who's work can be seen in galleries across the world (though usually behind a black curtain). In the 70's she worked extensively in porn and BDSM industry documenting the professional and personal lives of its stars. Despite the provocative subject, her photos are noted for their unexpectedly lyrical quality, capturing moments of loneliness as well as connection. Her incredible new book 'American Ecstasy' sets out to explore this era and to pay tribute to the golden age of porn. "I feel like my work is a salute to the sex workers of the world. And how much I care about them." Barbara's talk looks beyond the ethics of porn as a whole, focusing instead on the personal lives of those involved. She discusses the flashes of intimacy, exhibitionism and sisterhood encountered while one the job. A disarmingly intimate take on a subject marred in controversy and debate (...though a little x-rated, so strictly for over 18s!).

A generation of boys and girls could not go to school during Liberia’s civil war between 1999 and 2003. Now, as adults, many of these men and women are traumatised and unemployed, desensitised to love and relationships. For many women, selling sex is now the only way to survive. In Bomi County, community workers estimate that 75% of women with children are single mothers and Liberia’s rate of teenage pregnancy is one of the highest in the world. Hundreds of women have barely a roof over their head and they turn to the streets to make a living to feed their children and to send them to school. In 'Daughters of War', sex workers tell how they are struggling to cope in the aftermath of war, desperate to educate their children and change the future so the next generation will not be like them.

Sex workers across the world must often make a dangerous choice between protecting their health and avoiding police harassment or arrest. In many countries, police treat condoms as contraband, confiscating or destroying condoms they find on sex workers during both legal and illegal searches. Prosecutors may use confiscated condoms as criminal evidence of prostitution. Cops & Rubbers (http://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/publications/cops-rubbers) is an interactive board game produced by the Open Society Foundations for health and human rights advocates, health practitioners, academics, and policymakers that demonstrates the real consequences of these policing tactics for sex workers—including increased vulnerability to HIV infection. For more information about the dangers of treating condoms as evidence, please visit the Open Society Foundations website: http://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/reports/criminalizing-condoms

This video was played at a Fundraising event for Touching Base to celebrate the inauguration of our 5 new Patrons. Unfortunately the Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, even though supposedly retired - is still a hectically busy man, especially with his recent work as the chair of the UN Human Rights Committee reporting into human rights violations in North Korea. This sadly dragged him away from us on the day. Although Touching Base can’t trump the UN Security Council, Michael Kirby did find time to let us pre-record his Keynote Address at his chambers so he could share his thoughts with us on this special occasion. In his speech, Michael Kirby draws upon his experiences as a gay man, to talk about the similarities he can see in the way discrimination and stigma impact on people at a deeply personal level. He also describes how he sees the path of sex worker rights reflecting the progressive nature of law reform for gays and lesbians around the world. Michael Kirby also makes it clear that in his mind any moves to criminalise either sex workers or their clients are doomed to fail to eliminate the sex industry. He promotes the full decriminalisation of sex work as best practice, as identified by UN AIDS in their 2012 report, and Michael Kirby denounces the "Swedish Model" which criminalises the client. We will be providing a transcript of this speech as soon as possible.
