To This Day is a project based on a spoken word poem written by Shane Koyczan (http://www.shanekoyczan.com) called “To This Day”, to further explore the profound and lasting impact that bullying can have on an individual. Schools and families are in desperate need of proper tools to confront this problem. We can give them a starting point... A message that will have a far reaching and long lasting effect in confronting bullying. Animators and motion artists brought their unique styles to 20 second segments that will thread into one fluid voice. This collaborative volunteer effort demonstrates what a community of caring individuals are capable of when they come together. Stickboy, An Opera in Three Acts Music composed by Neil Weisensel Libretto by Shane Koyczan, based on his book, Stickboy Late last year, Shane Koyczan and Vancouver Opera asked if we'd like to partner on a brand new opera. We had never worked with projections, long-form animation, or live performance (not to mention opera!) before, so of course we said: yes please! Ten months later, our work is being projected over three massive screens, illustrating over 40 background settings and dark inner-workings of the main character in a 2-hour long stage performance called Stickboy. You can see it live in Vancouver until November 7, 2014 (visit vancouveropera.ca for more info). We're pleased to revisit this project again after a very busy few months for Amazing Factory, and we had to do something different and special for our first Giants of The Forest episode back. We were very fortunate to have the chance to film the amazing spoken word artist, Shane Koyczan. He made a quick call and the lovely people at the Vogue Theatre allowed us to come in and film it in their beautiful space. This is a different approach from other episodes. We changed up the style for this one, all in the name of awesome. Shane is an incredibly gifted artist, and usually you'd see him perform these pieces from a stage in front of a crowd. Today we have just him, in an empty theatre, speaking directly to you. The lack of music and sounds, and the immense empty space, makes this feel all the more intimate, and personal. You can't help but see Shane's good heart, and his genuine & warm personality when he speaks. Thankful that we got to meet such an incredible dude and artist, and thankful we get to share this with all of you. Here's Shane Koyczan, with his poem "More Often Than Sometimes." www.shanekoyczan.com Filmed with a Canon 5D Mark II www.giantsoftheforest.com www.amazingfactory.com

With over 10 million views on Youtube, Canadian Shane Koyczan is an unusual poet. Treating the subject of bullying, which Koyczan himself was subjected to when growing up, his spoken word poem To This Day created a wave of compassion and empathy with a worldwide audience. Shane Koyczan performed at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and was a huge success at TED this year. Now his work is included in the latest Amnesty International Campaign to raise awareness around the importance of Freedom of Expression.
