In 1980 Shanghai had no skyscrapers. It now has at least 4,000 — more than twice as many as New York. ‘This is Shanghai’ explores the diversities and eccentricities of the metropolis that is Shanghai going beyond the famous skyline. Photographer Rob Whitworth and urban identity expert JT Singh joined forces combining deep city exploration and pioneering filmmaking. ‘This is Shanghai’ is a roller coaster ride seamlessly weaving between the iconic, sparkling and mismatched buildings of the financial district travelling by boat and taxi touring Shanghai’s impressive infrastructure whilst glimpsing some of the lesser-known aspects of Shanghai life such as the lower stratum areas or the stunning graffiti of Moganshan road. And of course there is the opportunity to try some of the vast variety of street food and Shanghai’s most popular homegrown delicacy, the pan-fried pork dumplings, the shengjian bao. Wherever you travel in Shanghai the cities skyline is always present. The looming silhouette of the almost constructed Shanghai Tower now dominates and perfectly encapsulates the new heights this city is yet to reach. Once completed, in 2014, it will be the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. To understand the city, the team carried out rigorous urban exploration. In the words of JT “we walked, walked and walked, the Jane Jacobs way”. Weibo, China’s main social media platform was used to ask local Shanghainese people to share ideas of different vantage points and what they thought were the over-riding characteristics of the city. Stealth and curiosity were required to find and gain access to rooftops and locations. It became addictive for the team discovering breath-taking vantage points of the city. There was always an adrenaline rush upon reaching the top of a different building to see the vast urban jungle of Shanghai. Rob Whitworth (www.robwhitworth.co.uk/) is a creative time lapse photographer from the UK based in Asia. His previous videos, ‘Traffic in Frenetic HCMC’ and ‘Kuala Lumpur DAY-NIGHT’ have received international attention including being short listed for 7 film festivals, and have had received well over 2 million online views. JT Singh (www.jtsingh.com/) has explored hundreds of emerging cities around the world and is a next generation thinker about the value and impact of 21st century cities. Having grown up in Toronto JT is now based in China. He explains: “The over-riding reason we made this video was to creatively show the world visually how China is rising, in particular Chinese cities. Just as New York City exemplified the strengths and ambitions of emerging America in the 20th century, Shanghai, perhaps more than any old or emerging rival, will personify the power and dreams of rising Asia in the 21st century.” A ThrillingCities Production - www.thrillingcities.com Engineering cutting-edge Identities for Cities on the Rise JT Singh Website: www.jtsingh.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jtssingh Twitter: https://twitter.com/jtssingh Rob Whitworth Website: http://www.robwhitworth.co.uk/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RobWhitworthPhotography Copyright all images Rob Whitworth 2013 - www.robwhitworth.co.uk | Soundtrack used under license Artist ‘Subscape’ Track ‘Shanghai’ © submergedmusic

EOSHD.com presents a comprehensive cookbook for achieving a epic anamorphic look to your DSLR movies (by Andrew Reid) http://www.eoshd.com/anamorphic-guide Shot at the Jade Buddha Temple in Shanghai, one of the few that still remain. Panasonic GH2 paired with hack (44Mbit AVCHD) and Isco CentaVision 2x anamorphic. Moments in China is a collection of vivid moments I experienced while traveling around China last month. The piece flows from Hong Kong to Beijing, and visits Guilin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Some moments are more significant than others, but I have a personal connection with each. The video is particularly special to me because I have not had time for personal projects over the past several months. However, that is not to say that the past several months have not been exciting. I have had the chance to work on some interesting projects such as the Luminato Festival which aired on TV and at major theatres across Ontario, sequences for the Toronto Blue Jays, a set of commercials for Niagara Tourism, and promotional material for Toronto Tourism. I am also pleased to announce that I will be putting together Toronto Tourism's newest video aimed at garnering international interest for Toronto. I intend to take a unique approach. Thank you to Trevor Corrigan for creating the title; and my family, Jon B, Martin L, Henry Less, Derek Flack and Bryan Brock for various reasons. What if you could use human hair as an alternative to diminishing natural materials? Studio Swine travel along the Hair Highway to explore the hair trade and its potential as a future resource. www.studioswine.com Hair Highway is a contemporary take on the ancient Silk Road which transported not only silk but also technologies, aesthetics and ideas between East and West. Investigating the global hair industry in the Shandong province of China, Studio Swine followed the journey of the material from the people who sell their hair through to the hair merchants, markets and factories. The project documents this journey in a film and a collection of highly decorative objects. China is both the largest importer of tropical hardwood and the biggest exporter of human hair. By combining hair with a natural resin, Studio Swine has created a composite material that provides a sustainable alternative to the planet’s diminishing natural resources with an aesthetic that evokes the palettes of tortoiseshell and a grain resembling that of polished horn or exotic hardwoods. The result is a unique collection of exquisite objects inspired by the 1930’s Shanghai-deco style. As the world’s population rises, human hair is one natural resource that is increasing. Asian hair regenerates the fastest, growing 16 times more rapidly than tropical hardwoods; it is also incredibly strong - a single strand can take up to 100 grams. Hair Highway reflects on China’s relationship with the rest of the world, while exploring the idea that trade has the ability to not only transport products but also values and perceptions.
