March 4, 2011 marked the 100th anniversary of the loss of the wooden sailing barque Robert Kerr. To mark the occasion the UASBC placed a plaque on the wreck site. During her early years the Robert Kerr traded between the Pacific Northwest and England transporting goods and material for the Hudson Bay Company. She was bought by Captain Soule of Vancouver's Hastings Mill in October 1885 and was anchored in Burrard Inlet. The purchase was timely because on June 12, 1886 the Robert Kerr became a refuge for hundreds of people fleeing the Great Fire of Vancouver. In 1888 the Robert Kerr was bought by the CPR who refitted her as a coal barge to service the companies' trans-Pacific liners. On March 4th 1911 the Kerr was in tow of the tug Coulti when the tug strayed off course and towed the Kerr on to this reef off the north end of Thetis Island. The ship was found to be heavily damaged and was abandoned after some of the coal was salvaged, in what was an unfitting end for the 'ship that saved Vancouver.' www.UASBC.com

Lost on a Reef was filmed in the beautiful, remote stretch of reefs 1000 miles northwest of Honolulu, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. The film tells the story of six marine archeologists searching for shipwrecks in a place known more for its glorious coral reefs than the ghosts of ships past. The ships that came to grief on these reefs include everything from 18th century whaling ships to WWII sidewheel steamers. The wrecks are in a rare pristine state by virtue of being so remote, and most have lain there undiscovered for centuries.

Only six weeks after sinking, the ex-USS Kittiwake became home to one of its largest residents to date: a Goliath Grouper. This video shows Ocean Frontiers divers' first encounter with the grouper, who seems quite comfortable snuggled in next to the ship's propeller. There have been several reported sightings in the days following this encounter–we sure hope this big fella sticks around!

Recently we located and visited a shipwreck seemingly forgotten by time. a 65 foot tugboat from Westport, Oregon, the Louie was moored in Lake Union for many years and subsequently transferred to Lake Washington in the 1960s century. In 1973, she sank under suspicious circumstances and leaked several hundred gallons of fuel into the lake. Following the cleanup effort, she was likely forgotten (until now)...
