    • The Music Box - Andrew Shoben at the Royal Albert Hall

      from greyworld Added 993 6 0

On 23 September, the Royal Albert Hall was turned into a giant, interactive music box by TEDxAlbertopolis speaker Andrew Shoben. Shoben, founder of greyworld – a group of artists that produce playful art in public spaces – used a camera positioned on the Hall’s ceiling to capture the distribution of different audience groups across the seats in the venue. As the camera pans across the auditorium, an algorithm converted these patterns into sounds: each attendee will act as a pin in a giant music box, playing their part in a unique musical composition. “The performance was the first of its kind, combining mathematics, technology and creativity to turn the audience into a completely original instrument,” said Shoben. “greyworld have wanted to create an artwork with a large live audience for some time, so the opportunity to work with a space as exciting as the Royal Albert Hall, with 5000 people there, is a dream come true. The Hall is a giant music box, full of fabulous sounds, and this formed the inspiration for our idea - to treat our audience as if they are notes in a composition. The exciting - and the nerve wracking – thing, was that we couldnt know how the composition will sound until I was on stage, conducting. It was a really exciting opportunity for everyone to be involved in.”

Signs (2012) is an artwork created for Corelli College in London, UK. A special signpost with five moving arms is installed in the lobby of Corelli College. Each arm can point to anything on the earth or the solar system, showing the location and its distance from the school. One head for example, may point at Venus – it’s arm’s display showing the vast distance between the school and the planet. But as you watch, you notice the arm is moving to track the planet as it travels across the sky. The distance is updated too as Venus moves. Signs will also point to many things on the earth. Cities, places of interest, the homes of pupils, the origins of their families. The artwork can also point to things that move across the sky (like flights), across a sports field (like the position of a tennis ball) and across the political spectrum too, as world events unfold. It will point to social unrest, to sporting events, and to environmental change. Its five heads can also point to imaginary things, to things that will happen in the future, and alternative endings to stories. To mathematical solutions, to peoples ancestry and to scientific breakthroughs. And it will point to many many other kinds of things too. Commissioned for a school in South London, we believe the children will have a great deal of fun and learning dreaming up ways to use the artwork. A better film will be uploaded shortly. http://greyworld.org
