Whose America is it, anyway? This program starts off with a blunt question addressed by a black reporter in Somerville, MA., to a white police officer in town, "Do you think racism exists in Somerville?" From there the video tape shows a striking demonstration of police brutality in cases from "Lynch: Who Killed Michael Stewart?" to "The Day the Klan Marched." Made long before the Rodney King video, this program is a hard look at police brutality. Producers: Shu Lea Cheang and Roy Wilson

LaptopsRus is a self-organized open-participatory platform engaged in networking woman live performers. In Spring 2009, laptopsRus launched "MEETING | REUNIÓN", bringing woman live performers for open public meeting/performance set inside an electronically updated boxing ring. We want to acknowledge woman work force and resilient capacity in these time of personal and general crisis. "NETWORK | RE:WORK" is conceived as an online and offline Cacerolazo live performance with woman performers, homemakers, nomads, artists, activists across north-south continents and east-west hemisphere. Combining network streams of audiovisual materials with local perspectives in addressing issues of concerns, the CrisisRus live performance remixes slogans, signals, noise and visuals in AV manifestation. Working with the internet since the 90s, Shu Lea Cheang and Mark Amerika have seen the world wide web develop, shift and change into what it is today. As so-called ‘net natives’ Cheang and Amerika share many of the concerns of artists evolving with the WWW, from its emergence in the late-80s/early 90s, to the dot-com bubble, its burst, and now Web 2.0. In this interview at Furtherfield Gallery before the launch of their exhibition, running August 31 to October 20, Amerika and Cheang kindly shared their thoughts on data collection, gentrification of the internet and the artist 2.0 commodified.

Live Cinema performance by Shu Lea Cheang. UKI is conceived as a sequel to Shu Lea Cheang's cyberpunk feature I.K.U. (2000, premiered at Sundance Film Festival). I.K.U. tells the story of GENOM Corp, an internet porn enterprise who dispatches I.K.U. coders to collect orgasm data. Made into mobilephone chip, GENOM introduces orgasm on the go and makes a huge profit. In post-netcrash UKI, the data deprived I.K.U. coders are dumped on the Etrashscape where coders, twitters, networkers crush and crashed. Exchanging sex for code, code sexing code, UKI as virus emerge while GENOM retreats to BioNet. Taking human body hostage, GENOM reformats blood cells into microcomputing ORGANISMO (organic orgasm). UKI, the virus, enacted to infect a city, propagated, mobilized to infiltrate BIONET, sabotage ORGANISMO and reclaim the lost orgasm data. // FOR EMBEDDING GO TO THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE AT http://www.armitage.tv/wp-2011/uki-viral-performance-von-shu-lea-cheang/ // On stage artists (Berlin) Martin Backes http://www.martinbackes.com/ Servando Barreiro http://servandobarreiro.es Christopher Fröhlich http://www.antialias.de/ Shu Lea Cheang http://www.mauvaiscontact.info/ Brendan Howell http://www.wintermute.org/brendan/ Peter Newman http://peter-newman.com/ João Pais http://www.endphase.net/ Jodi Rose http://www.singingbridges.net Malte Steiner http://www.block4.com/ Domestic Violence Cinema characters created and performed by: Coder xYx [Laika] UKI Krew [Agnese] Coder XQ [Quimera Yan] RUNNER Axia[Ceci Quimera] UKI Marimacho [Florian Tokioss] Coder madlilit [klau] Agent Pony Boy[Patri] UKI FANtasia [Maria Mitsopoulou] Baby Queen [Marianissima] Coder Lubna[Diana Pornoterrorista] UKI Tripcall [Melina Peña] UKI Octo-Pussy [Helen Lafloresta] UKI Mosca [Idoia] UKI Karo [Carolina] Mutant Esteno & Lil [ Majo & Elena] VirusSt.Maria [Maria Llopis] Trash Mistress [Radíe Manssour]
