1. Bill Moyers Essay: On the Sabotage of Democracy

    from BillMoyers.com Added 102K 35 4

This week’s government shutdown has consequences for all of us, costing an estimated $300 million each day that the government is closed for business. Many Americans have voiced their frustrations with the fallout from the shutdown on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter using the hash tag #DearCongress. Here, Bill Moyers shares his own frustrations, admonishing the Republican Party for holding the country hostage via an irrational “ransom list” of demands — while sabotaging democracy in the process. “When the President refused to buckle to this extortion, they threw their tantrum,” Bill says. ”Like the die-hards of the racist South a century and a half ago, who would destroy the union before giving up their slaves, so would these people burn down the place, sink the ship.” He goes on to tell us where the “reckless ambition” of the Republicans could lead us.

For nearly 100 years, national park rangers have dedicated their lives to protecting America’s most precious places and the millions of people within their boundaries. But when Congress closed the national parks, angry visitors criticized the Park Service for keeping people out. As federal employees, park rangers can’t share their personal views publicly. So we offered anonymity in return for their testimonies. This is what they wrote. (Produced in partnership between National Parks Conservation Association and National Park Experience)

With the government shutdown continuing and no real negotiations happening, it seems that Captain Ted Cruz is still at the helm of the Republican Party. It's helpful to remember that the Tea Party crew's main demand is an end to Obamacare, a health care reform law that was passed years ago. A Mark Fiore political animation.

TREASURE - The Story of Marcus Hook (2013) 20 min. color, ENG http://treasurethefilm.com Marcus Hook is a small refinery town close to Philadelphia. For decades the oil business was the community’s bread and butter, but in December 2011 when the Sunoco refinery shut down, the town was left on the brink of an unprecedented crisis. Renovating his house, ex-refinery worker Michael Manerchia found the remains of the plankhouse of Blackbeard’s mistress. This unexpected discovery gave Manerchia the inspiration to create a pirate festival and in this way bring business back to the town. Treasure chronicles the efforts of a community determined to survive the decline of heavy industry. The town’s future is being written as we speak, but one thing is certain: If Marcus Hook wasn’t born with the refinery, it doesn’t have to die with it either.
