Folk Night is a semi-annual event held at the home of some friends on the edge of Chapel Hill and Durham, out in the woods where there are more deer than people. The first Folk Night, not a few of us got lost on the way there; the dark twisting roads and deep ditches lining the way plagued us. But when we arrived, the long way had been worth it. For there we found friends and a fire and poetry and guitars. Some things are like this, the rare and blessed moments are arrived at after a winding road, and a few ditches by way of a dark path. But then at the end there is light and music and shared grace. This performance comes from the second Folk Night, where Brandon Squizzato performed "Sigh No More" by the Mumford & Sons. We're all captivated by Brandon's vocal abilities, and after having heard his rendition of several Amos Lee songs, I honestly preferred his (and I think Amos Lee is amazing!) I love that I only used the built-in mic for this song because the acoustics in this beautiful, wooden house are so great that you can hear every sound in every part of the room. The fire behind him added a nice undertone to the whole song. It's a good reminder too: the fire of youth. So much blazing fire at this age. (Once when I was 21, a brain scientist had been listening to me talk about how much I thought and felt and felt out of control sometimes, and he said something to me I'll never forget. "That's totally normal, your brain is on fire at this age.") All the songs on the Mumford & Sons album are so loaded with the regrets of past love, but also with a strong resistance to complacency. This song, "Sigh No More" is actually a paraphrase from a few lines in Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing." Here are those lines: Sigh no more, ladies, sigh nor more; Men were deceivers ever; One foot in sea and one on shore, To one thing constant never; Then sigh not so, But let them go, And be you blithe and bonny; Converting all your sounds of woe Into. Hey nonny, nonny. Sing no more ditties, sing no mo, Or dumps so dull and heavy; The fraud of men was ever so, Since summer first was leavy. Then sigh not so, But let them go, And be you blithe and bonny, Converting all your sounds of woe Into. Hey, nonny, nonny. http://www.poetryloverspage.com/poets/shakespeare/sigh_no_more_ladies.html The honest person knows they have not always been right in love. The mind on fire makes fickle friends. But the strength of youth is hope. That things can change and will. And of turning things around, bringing life and music out of the hurts. So here's to the fire of youth, to good friends, and to everlasting good nights like this one.
