      • "Ode to Billy [the Kid]" by Greg Renfro

        05:03

        from Greg Renfro / Added

Original song, written in 2004, performed by myself, Charlie Alfero, Kevin Compton, and Shems Nickle. Witten when a lawsuit was pending to exhume Billy the Kid's mother from a Silver City, NM, gravesite to get DNA for an attempt to prove that Billy was buried in his grave in Lincoln County, NM. Recorded at Diane's Parlor in Silver City, NM, August 23, 2013. This group of four musicians had only performed together once before. This song was selected to lead off a number of local original songs used in a film promoting Grant County, New Mexico, to filmmakers (http://www.scsun-news.com/ci_20822877). Lyrics: Well, they say he rode from Kansas / along the Chisholm Trail / wound up in Silver City / bussing tables at the Star Hotel / Took a life of thievin' / til one good man lay dead / For a thrill and eighteen dollars / put a bullet right through his head / (CHORUS) Didn't give a damn about the law / just how quick he could draw / didn't give a damn what he did / Billy the Kidd (v2) So he rode to Lincoln County / a range war it was called / Fell in with desperadoes / the wrong side of the law / His future took a tragic turn / when two more men lay dead / Now Billy was a wanted kid / with a bounty on his head / CHORUS (v3) Well, they caught him in Mesilla / in the middle of the night / Pat Garrett and his posse / swore they'd make things right / Convicted of the killings / and sentenced to hang / But Fate, she had a different plan / for Garrett and his gang (CHORUS) (v4) Now some say Pat shot Billy / took the law in his hand / others claim Billy lived / to be a tired old man / Legends they lie buried / stories often told / some in Silver City / go grave-diggin' for gold. CHORUS: Don't give a damn where he's hid / rest in peace Billy the Kid / Don't give a damn where he's hid / rest in Peace Billy the Kid.

A film by Peter Bill Sponsored by the Grant County Trails Group Made possible by Community Enhancement Fund Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation and Grant County Community Health Council Walking trails has always been important to me. From growing up walking old Quinnipiac trails back in Connecticut, to Hiking in the Boy scouts and at Reed College in Oregon- I think I came to understand who I am on a trail. I am not a fast walker, I always stop to smell the roses or watch the clouds. A few years back I had complications from surgery, and one and half of my two lungs collapsed! Slowly I rehabilitated, going for long walks, first on the flats, then venturing into the hills. Gradually my lungs got stronger, and my strength returned. Fast or slow, walking helps you think, and keeps you healthy. Part of my notion of how I teach is the metaphor of walking a trail. I am walking down an intellectual path with my students- I am not leading them like a shepherd- it is more we are following the same way in concert, and along the route we stop and talk about where we are going and where the different paths might lead. When Claire came to me with a notion of making a film about walking trails in Grant County, I jumped at the opportunity. Walking a trail is a thoughtful exercise. Our society needs to thoughtfully imagine a better future, and what path we need to get there. I made this composition originally in 5.1 surround sound, and re-edited it for stereo. The subject of the composition is the grass fire that swept through our neighborhood in Silver City, New Mexico, in March of 2011. It scorched the land and burned several nearby houses. We were lucky in that our house was spared, but we did have a very narrow escape, which this composition chronicles. I wrote this composition as part of the requirements to fulfill "Digital Sound Creation & Editing" at Western New Mexico University, Spring 2011, as part of the Interdisciplinary Expressive Arts program. Professor: Suk Jun Kim.

La Llorona is the Mexican tale of the weeping woman, a woman who, in some versions, is scorned by her lover and drowns her children in a river. In remorse, she is doomed to haunt the river ways and lakes of the Southwest searching for her lost children...or children to replace the ones she lost. While the story is most likely fictional, it does have many real parallels to modern day crimes of mothers killing their own children. I wanted to explore through video and sound the justifications and desperations that would head to such a crime. This film was shot in Fierro, a local ghosttown, and Bill Evans Lake and the Gila River near Silver City NM. Starring Gabrielle Bennet. The video was presented as a 3 channel video installation at New Media Nights at Western New Mexico University.
