As technical director on this job it was my role to make sure that the idea's that Simon (CD) had were going to work. This job had some very complicated camera moves combining live action, 3d, stop motion and puppeteering to create the final tvc. I visualised the whole commercial in C4d to scale including camera moves and built the set and props to match. I was also the designer of almost all of the elements and with the help of Kiah we got them all made and cut out. Compositing involved painting out scratches and re creating camera moves, as well as adding additional elements such as the paper man and video screen. This is one of my favourite jobs to have worked on. And yes that is my hand with the match. In November 2010, agency US Sydney approached me just after I arrived at Engine. They wanted to create promos for their new 3 part TV documentary Immigration Nation which explores the history of the white Australia policy. US Sydney wanted to create three live action-promos for each of the episodes and one 'Coming Soon' promo for the whole series. The visual idea for the Coming Soon promo was undefined, but US Sydney had written a killer voice over script with a great sting in the tail. SBS, not grasping what it would looked like, nearly killed the Coming Soon Promo. But in a last ditch attempt I offered up my work on Taking Liberties as visual reference for what the Coming Soon promo could look like. It did the trick. Props must go to great illustration provided by Pete McDonald and Typography by Luca from Likeminded Studio. And of course the efforts of the Engine team. So far, the Immigration Nation Coming Soon promo has piked up a slew of awards, including 3 Golds and one Silver at the Promax BDA ANZ awards and 2 Golds at the World Promax BDA awards.

I won a competitive pitch in March 2011 with McCann Erickson Sydney to create three 30 Second TV spots for The MasterCard Priceless Gig series. I pitched directly to the McCann's CD at the time, Michael Raso. This was the first spot in the series, to promote the Birds of Tokyo Gig at Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour. I approached each of the spots for this series of MasterCard commercials with a tactile in-camera aesthetic, married with the playful transition ideas I've become known for. This spot was pure grunt. We did everything in camera in as pure a way as possible. All the felt flames, the paper harbour maps, the buildings, the running kids, the smoke and dust from the hearts, everything was modeled and shot frame by frame. Looking back, we could have made our lives a lot easier by compositing and 3D modeling just a little, but the McCann's creatives were really into the purity of our approach, so what do you do? Most memorable moment would be DP Cal Gardiner hand cranking the dolly and track over the paper harbour set and climbing up and down a ladder to shoot each frame. That was an interesting evening! Motionographer very kindly posted this spot as a Quickie.

I won a competitive pitch in March 2011 with McCann Erickson Sydney to create three 30 Second TV spots for The MasterCard Priceless Gig series. I pitched directly to the McCann's CD at the time, Michael Raso. This was the second spot in the series, to promote the Kasabian Gig in the Melbourne Docklands. I approached each of the spots for this series of MasterCard commercials with a tactile in-camera aesthetic, married with the playful transition ideas I've become known for. My favourite part of this spot is where the red dot in the paper thermometer becomes a match head catching fire. We then pull 90 degrees round the match head to see a hand holding the match. We achieved this by bringing in 'Lester' a talented key grip who often works with Calvin and Tony Gardiner. Lester devised a rig that allowed us to pivot the Red Camera 90 degrees around a hand holding a burning match, and then track across and down the set we had built. Well done Lester! Motionographer very kindly posted this spot as a full post.

This trailer was produced for the major Australian channel SBS. I was the lead animator under the direction of Simon Robson at Engine. The trailer went on to win World Gold for Animation at the Promax awards. I'm very proud of this piece as having been engaged as at the project senior, I was able to put my stamp on the final result. The team at Engine were all first class, and thus stands as both a great experience and a crowning achievement for my year in Sydney.

The film is being released piece-by-piece, so it’s still all coming together, but looks really great!
