This is the first-ever short film I made for a Singapore Film module project in NUS. It explores the delicate yet complex relationship between a late teen, shaped by an ever-evolving Singapore society increasingly detached from its heritage and past, and his grandmother, a peacefully-aging elderly woman from the heartlands who aims to preserve her mechanical daily routine. The entire film takes place over the course of one day. Starring myself and very my own grandmother, the film is shot in hand-held digital camera.

Website: http://bit.ly/ragtoriches | Facebook: http://facebook.com/nusragtoriches What is Rag & Flag? Rag & Flag was started in 1959 in National University of Singapore (NUS) as a way raise funds for a charitable cause. Selling flags refers to the tin cans NUS students used to solicit donations from the public. 'Rag' refers to the parade of dance performances and floats, built out of recycled materials, to drum up publicity and support, and to thank the public for their donations. At present, this tradition has evolved into an annual staple on the NUS calendar during Freshmen Orientation Week, with hundreds of students and tens of thousands of dollars consistently being involved in a colourful day long affair. Synopsis: Intrigued by how Rag & Flag elicits reactions that range from extreme passion to simple indifference and even utter distaste, a group of NUS students set out to discover the origins of this NUS tradition. But dwelling deeper into the present-day microcosm of Rag & Flag, the controversy behind this annual event becomes apparent. From vicious inter-hall and inter-faculty rivalry to escalating costs afflicting all parties, interviews with key participants paint a stark picture of a tradition gone astray and evolving out of proportions. Digging through dusty archives and interviewing participants who ranged from the ordinary Ragger to key leaders, and even an alumni member who oversaw the event's birth, this documentary is a journey to rediscover the genesis and original purpose of Rag & Flag; uncover its present-day allure, controversies and dilemmas; and to examine its future.

In a dingy motel room that is as hot and clammy as the jungle painted on its walls, a sexual threesome has been arranged to take place. Except that the two men lying in wait are officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau, ready to apprehend their suspect, who is going to show up with crystal meth at any moment. Staff Sergeant Boon is garrulous and relaxed; for him, this is a job just like any other. Inspector Anton, on the other hand, is preoccupied and tense, and is increasingly restless. As the wait for the suspect lengthens, it is apparent Anton has something infinitely more personal at stake. In what appears to be a routine crackdown operation, which walls will come tumbling down, and what thresholds will be crossed? In the films tropical swelter, how does one ascertain that everything one sees is not a mirage from a fragmenting mind?

Nominated for 3 Singapore Film Awards - Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Performance. Winner of Best Cinematography ay the Singapore Film Awards 2008 *********************************** Extract from Vancouver International Film Festival website - Written by Tony Rayns "Bane of the Singapore censors, Sun Koh is a naughty director. She invited six other Singaporean filmmakers to join her in a game of "exquisite corpse": a chain of episodes linked only by the presence of actor Sunny Pang which mysteriously adds up to more than the sum of its parts. Singapore’s film culture has been stymied from the start by interference from the "free" world’s most conservative paternalistic government; here, for the first time outside the work of Eric Khoo and Royston Tan, it suddenly looks lively and inventive. It’s not quite as random as the exquisite corpse game strictly requires, because directors worked on each other’s episodes, but you’ll forgive the odd contrivance because the overall result is so much fun. Sunny Pang finds himself playing everything from a son stuck looking after a dying father to a participant in a bisexual orgy, from a factory-floor worker discussing the various roles he’s played in the film to a vagrant on a park bench. Despite the built-in discontinuities, the flow of everyday scenes and fantasies is quite persuasive; the game works as the surrealists intended it, sparking unforeseen implications and associations. The surrealists might also have enjoyed the eroticism."
