Greg Moore, Greyson Sally and Dave Kamena share their glorious winter storm skiing session at Snowbird Utah with you. Special thanks to our veteran Cliff bellman, named Pat who gives us all our insider tips on just where to ski and where to find everything. Also Thanks to road and avalanche who ever keeps us safe and I've never seen the Cliff Lodge so clean and easy to ski and eat out of. First day of new snow brought 13" of buttery greasy snow that fell overnight which blessed us with a rare blue bird sunny powder day. Every skiers turn feel like you were born with skis on. Every run was Open and covered. Gad chutes and anywhere above mid-gad restaurant and upper big emma were amazing. The snow was pliable and easy to ski with smooth bottoms everywhere. The second day God gifted us from the north with 33 inches of worlds lightest snow. Far beyond the word fluff. It was so light and airy you would hit the bottom 4 ft down from yesterday or walk through it and feel little or no resistance. It came down in its gaseous state about 5 inches an hour and we could see all day other than sweating up goggles from endless descents. Powder perfect also made for lots of surprises underneath. One big giant puff pile would be deep snow for a face shot and another would hide a just under surface snow snake for new goggle face plant. While neither of these storms produced the skiing of 2012 Christmas storms, it was great to escape into snowbirds world and feel apart of their storm war mode. When you hear the constant bomb blast echoing a big surprise like thunder during avalanche control bombing, you know its a good day. Greyson an Intern who helped Greg work on boats didn't have a stitch of clothing, all rented. Nor did he have any big mountain or real off piste tree and rock chute experience. Shear fitness and adaptiveness kept his pace almost even with Kamena and Moore. His prior experience on snow shoe skis which are only 2 ft long, had his weight far back and arms down to sides without a pole plant in the beginning but, it was enough to muscle his way around the mountain and keep the fast punishing pace. With shoulders squarer in video and his new pole planting technique starting to show up, Greyson leave's the mountain with tools you can't buy or find anywhere else in the world. If you can do this authors hidden routes here in Jan., you can heli Alaska. Guest appearance, my friend Mr. Dave Kamena another seasoned veteran skier we all know and love brought his backcountry cross over gear, big fat powder boards that can turn to teli with a button. Hmmm, I thought but whoa, Dave delivered an A game pointing them straight down the mountain even while in tight trees. I would get Dave to the spot and bam Dave had no trouble lead the way during our waist deep snow assault. First tracking every powder hole I could find for him. Dave, filming you was tough. You were going so fast, I just found my own fresh next to your line. I'll add "after watching video of Dave, I noticed how great his poles weight balance and shoulder techniques were." I feel Dave would be a strong contender for one of the best off piste skiers in San Diego. Drive there and back, a Drew Brees.. Greyson drove his shift perfectly, I was well rested after. Thanks to the high elevation Hilton Hummer, she delivered again. Thanks to Jesus, No injuries or road mishaps to report. Solid performance by all involved in sharing Snowbirds founder Dick Basses Great Vision with us. Ad: boat yacht ship repair http://mooregreg.com

It was an epic year for snowfall in the Wasatch Mountains, with more than 700 inches recorded at the Cottonwood Canyons' resorts. We chatted with Department Chair of atmospheric sciences, Jim Steenburgh (AKA “Wasatch Weather Weenie”), to tell us why Utah has the “greatest snow on Earth.” Check out what he had to say. You can learn more about Prof. Steenburgh's work at http://wasatchweatherweenies.blogspot.com/
