        • Holli Dillon Sky Arts Mentorship Grant Submission

          1. Holli Dillon created Dilly Dolls (the bouffon clown) as a vehicle to create work about her own experiences with eating disorders. 2. 'An Appetite for Destruction' is an abstract physical comedy about one clowns search for love via bulimia. A one woman show, based on personal experience. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Buster Keaton, set in a toilet. 3. The Sky Academy Arts Scholarship will help take Holli's career to the next level by enabling her to fully realise Dilly's potential and craft the show into a professional standard to tour and take to festivals to attract management, casting agents, bookers and producers; to improve the production quality and outreach of the work. 4. Holli's greater artistic goal is to engage the topic of mental health in unique and imaginative ways, that help destigmatise mental illness and provide a safe platform to talk openly about it. 5. As part of the scholarship Holli would receive a mentor from the senior management team at Sky. Mentors at Sky include senior leaders in marketing / digital / commissioning / production / finance / legal / PR / creative. As this is sensitive work it is crucial that Holli enlists the help of an artistic team and gains as much business advice as possible. Her strengths are in innovation, creative direction and design, marketing and PR; however, she is dyslexic and although industrious, she often needs to ask for help. Holli would benefit greatly from the practical application of finance, legal and production mentorship in order to make the most out of this production and round herself as a creative professional.

1 In A Million You (video), 2015 6 channel HD video, edition of 3, 6 minutes Funded by SkyArts Ignition: Futures Fund in association with IdeasTap (UK) With the support of curator Claire Doherty, Director of Situations 1 in a Million You challenges the ways in which we use social media for self-representation, and presents a timely interpretation of the art of portraiture in a society of global participation. Using the ‘word of mouth’ culture of social media, hundreds of strangers anonymously received a tattoo-like mask through the post. The participants recorded their new identity with still and moving images, drawings, and texts, which they then shared online, allowing them to become part of a digitally connected tribe. This eclectic collection of individual responses is creating a monumental virtual drawing which spreads across the globe, yet still manages to maintain its personal resonance.

Commissioned as part of BMWs partnership with Sky Arts. The music for these idents was originally created as a short piece in response to an initial cut of the film, focusing on the movement of light over the cars surface. The piece combines acoustic instruments, which have been digitally processed, with simple sine tones. Segments of the original audio were then re cut as the film was edited to produce the final 12 idents. Produced through Chomp & Luma for FCB Inferno. Working with design courses around the UK inspired me to launch The Sky Arts Stings competition as avenue to support craft skills and to open up the Sky airways to fresh young talent. The creativity and the quality of the work that was entered inspired us to position the student work at the core of the Arts channel identity, tying directly into our brand value of making the arts accessible to all. Four years on we have worked with scores of talented young people, helping them to launch their careers and inspiring ourselves in the process.
