This film presents examples of good practices in project planning and implementation that not only build needed infrastructure but also account for the needs of the affected population.

Over half a million families live in Buenos Aires slums ------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is a place where even the police does not dare to go.The police patrols the entry point into the slum, but they do not go further in. I was strongly warned not even to think of going in there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Illegally located between major tourist hubs and one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, the shanty town Villa 31 has been a source of controversy in the capital of Argentina for over eight decades. Not only do poor Argentinians live here, but also Uruguyans and Bolivians who came to an economically stronger country and ended up on the street. The slums are growing, and because they cannot only expand in width, they are also growing in height. In the ruins of houses improvized ad-ons have entire families living in them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- video photo audio edit 2014 © Jan J. HOPE is very proud of the amazing volunteers who give their time, energy and skills to help by working on our projects. Here, Johanna tells of her experience of volunteering with HOPE in Kolkata. To find out more about volunteering with HOPE please visit hopefoundation.ie/get-involved/volunteer/ Set up in 1999, The Hope Foundation is a registered Irish charity with offices established Ireland, India, the UK, Germany and the USA. For the past 15 years The Hope Foundation’s extensive work has been considered critical in ensuring the rights of the underprivileged sections of society, especially the street and slum children of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), India. The Hope Foundation has grown to employ over 700 people in India in its mission to provide a brighter future for the 250,000 children who sleep on the streets and in the slums of Kolkata every day. Living on the street, the children are exposed to acute hunger and sever sexual and physical abuse. Those who survive are left to fend for themselves, with no promise of a safe future. HOPE works to free them from lives of pain, abuse, poverty and darkness. HOPE now funds and operates over 60 projects in and around Kolkata to provide the basic rights of education, nutrition, health care and protection for Kolkata’s vulnerable children. HOPE works with 14 local Indian NGO partner organisations to rescue thousands of children and give them a better future. HOPE’s projects include protection homes for vulnerable children, education centres, life skills training units, Drop-in centres for street children, Primary Healthcare Programme in partnership with Irish Aid, a night ambulance to keep vigil on street children at night and our own hospital for the poor and needy. To date, HOPE has reached out to nearly 30,000 vulnerable children and many more impoverished people in Kolkata to help give them the education, protection and basic level of healthcare to be able to provide a better life and future for themselves.
