Deep in the slums of Pakistan's biggest city is a 15-months-old boy with a problem that could, perhaps should, have been conquered long before he was born. Mustafa crawls happily across the dirt floor of his home in Karachi, but when his mother tries to stand him up his difficulties become obvious. His leg is visibly weak and his foot twisted and hanging uselessly at an odd angle. While most of the world has consigned polio to history, as ITV News Diplomatic Correspondent John Ray reports, Mustafa's world will be confined by its crippling effects.

        • Kaali Peeli Khwahishein: Conversations With Mumbai Taxi Drivers

Many of us deal with public transport - taxis, auto-rickshaws, buses, trains - on a daily basis. Almost always, we are hurried by the more ‘important' things in life, like getting to work, or reaching the dinner-date, leaving the conversation with the driver or conductor quite polite and perfunctory. Like extras on the set of a movie, we see these characters everyday, but never really get to know them. So, Flamingo decided to let the ‘important’ things wait, and sat down for impromptu, candid conversations with ten Mumbai taxi drivers. The driver seat doubles up as a great vantage point, and the taxi-drivers told us about how, everyday, they see life unravel and evolve in this city of dreams. Their daily struggles reveal secretly harboured hopes and dreams for themselves, their families and the city. They speak of their travails, which are no different from the average Mumbaikar’s: navigating poor infrastructure, terrorist attacks, inflation, arbitrary laws, and raising morally upright children. While they yearn for the Mumbai which had time for civility and courtesy, they have surprisingly few expectations from the thousands of passengers they ferry everyday. Somehow, an undying faith in humanity survives the harsh treatment they are meted out daily at the hands of irate customers, police officials and even other taxi drivers. Like their Kali–Peeli (a fond term for the iconic black and yellow taxi), their Khwahishein (hopes and dreams) for themselves, and the city, make for a tapestry of contrasting colours. A Flamingo Production Dir: Tehmina Sabuwala Art: Mili Sethia Running time: 20:52 About Flamingo: Flamingo was founded in 1997 with the aim to deliver incisive, creative brand thinking, illuminated by profound people insight and cultural understanding. How can a shanty town located at the heart of the city be worlds apart from it? “Today 71.9 per cent of urban Africans live in slums, variously known as shantytowns or bidonvilles.” - UN-HABITAT Makoko is located in Lagos, Nigeria and houses over 100,000 people yet there is no running water or electricity. It is a shantytown on the lagoon but it seems like many a times, the people there are forgotten, and unless you belong to this community of fishermen and wood processors, the only “contact” is the view of wood and corrugated metal roofs from the third mainland bridge. If you do manage to float through the shanty, shouts of broken English or a French dialect surround you, as alot of the inhabitants are from neighbouring countries such as Benin and Togo searching for bigger and better opportunities in Lagos, only to find out the utopia they imagined, isn’t as easy to survive in as they had hoped. read more on ... tcardoso.allyou.net

In less than one generation, Asia underwent a social and economic transformation unparalleled in history. But, as of 1997, one question remained to be answered: can this economic miracle of the closing decades of the 20th century be transformed into the sustainable development miracle of the 21st?
