The Studio collaborated with Ceri Payne on his latest offering for Discovery's Quest channel with a launch promo for Robson Green's 'Extreme Fisherman'. The promo shows Robson being caught by a fish hook outside a pub and then reeled in through streets and countryside until he is dragged through a river and hauled out onto the bank where the Quest logo is revealed. The Studio went on the shoot to offer VFX supervision as well as providing CG and post solutions. The main body of the promo required extensive clean up and retouching to remove the rig that Robson was being winched and dragged along the floor with. This required clean plates being created which were then match moved back into the original shot. The hook and rope had to be added into every shot which were created in 3d. The Studio ran various R&D simulations to create an authentic looking rope which had the right tension and movement. One particularity challenging shot was where Robson is initially hooked and the rope had to enter frame and hook him on his jacket and yank him to the floor. The endframe was another challenging shot as there was limited time and resources on the day to build a complete riverbank set. The Studio's solution was to create a countryside matte painting for the back drop of the river bank. Then create a CG river, as well as extending the set of the river bank. The next challenge was to create displacement of the water surface for the exit of Robson, this was all created in CG and combined with 2d shot effects plates of water. Logo and rope action were then added to the 3d scene as well as camera movement to create the final composite. The finished composite was then graded in Smoke & Mirrors resolve to create the final master. Pre-order for 11th August release. Vinyl edition will follow shortly. 'Like Animal Collective with Phil Spector at the controls' NME Engineers release their fourth album, Always Returning, on 11th August via Kscope. Engineers, who currently comprise Liverpudlian multi-instrumentalist Mark Peters and celebrated German ambient artist/producer Ulrich Schnauss and London based drummer and composer Matthew Linley, have been creating mesmerising music with brilliantly shaded guitar textures and teasing lyrical ambiguities for over ten years across three albums -- 2005's debut Engineers ('hypnotic lullabies from beautific Brit newcomers' **** Q), 2009's Three Fact Fader ('a blistering statement of intent' **** The Sunday Times), and 2010's swift follow-up In Praise of More ('should be given to most UK bands as an example of in making an album that is a joy to behold' 8/10 Clash). Written and recorded alone at home in York by Peters, before being coated with deft brush strokes of ambient electronica by Schnauss; Always Returning is a record that unhurriedly drifts in and out of focus, hinting at themes without ever making them so explicit that the listener can't map out their own personal interpretations. It delivers an overall emotional heft that's impossible to pull away from. If the album has a theme, its the sense that our internet-led all-access culture is stripping away the mythology and mystery in music. "As a teenager looking into the future I'd have loved to have been able to hear anything all the time, anytime," says Peters. "But everyone's so used to getting that now, and getting information about artists instantly, that it's undermining music and art in general." An analogue approach was taken to give the album warmth, with live drums recorded in a day by Matthew Linley; computers discarded in favour of 70s processors. The title of the album, Always Returning, reflects Peters' addiction to the creative process; it's an album about his own submission to the thrill of simply making music. "Music's something I talk about every day, something I'm always going back to. I can't imagine finishing an album and not having a compulsion to get right back into it," he says. So it is that Always Returning feels different yet the same, reflecting as it does a passion that's never dimmed.
