Each year, during the full moons of spring, whale sharks gather in Gladden Spit, a remote reef located 30 miles off the coast of Belize. Gladden Spit is an important reproduction site for more than 35 species of fish who aggregate there to spawn. Whale sharks are attracted by the huge cloud of gametes released into the water. Not so long ago the site was endangered due to uncontrolled fishing. A local conservation organization, S.E.A was chosen to manage the area and protect it. One of their initiatives is the promotion of sustainable tourism based on whale sharks.

The very first Show Reel from my footage archives way back in 2009. It features some of the best footage I captured of marine life over the course of 2008 and 2009 in the Red Sea. Being in the water almost 365 days of the year increased my chances to film animal behavior not often captured on film. This footage is featured in my stock footage archive which has hours of unique underwater shots available to purchase for a wide range of licensing types. In three special locations along the Meso-American Reef, whale sharks gather in large numbers during certain times of the year, creating some of the most impressive marine aggregations found anywhere on Earth. What draws them here? Where do they come from and where do they go? And, what is being done to protect them. Our first stop on the journey takes us to Gladdens Spit, Belize, where 10’s of thousands of snappers spawning attract dozens of whale sharks. This short promo video is a thank you to Isla Marisol resort for all their support!

        • World’s Most Robust Marine Reserve

A thriving undersea wildlife park tucked away near the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula has proven to be the world’s most robust marine reserve in the world. A 10-year analysis of Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP), revealed that the total amount of fish in the reserve ecosystem (the “biomass”) boomed more than 460 percent from 1999 to 2009. Citizens living around Cabo Pulmo, previously depleted by fishing, established the park in 1995 and have strictly enforced its “no take” restrictions. The most striking result is that fish communities at a depleted site can recover up to a level comparable to remote, pristine sites that have never been fished by humans. This video was designed as educational material and was not created for Profit Purposes as stipulated by the mission of the Gulf of California Marine Program at SIO.

In July we traveled from Hawaii to the Bahamas....a long trip! We stayed on board a dive boat for a week and had some very interesting dives. I was testing out the Midland XTC - a sort of "faux pro". It elicited some funny reactions from the marine life. This is a summary of the dives and the Caribbean critters.
