      • Snow Goose Hunting: Scouting

        12:46

        from Blake Hagemeier / Added

Snow goose hunting success can come from spending time scouting. You have to know where the snow geese are, where they're feeding, and how they're getting there. Even with hours of driving and hundreds of miles, all the scouting doesn't always pay off. Mother nature heavily dictates the rate of the migration and often times snow geese will fly different routes and feed in different fields on a daily basis. The poor weather and unpredictableness of snow geese left us frustrated during most of our hunts during the conservation season in Illinois. Despite our best efforts to find good fields to snow goose hunt in, the geese always seemed to stay a step ahead of us, but we managed to scratch together a few good hunts.

Snow goose hunting can be frustrating to say the least. Hours of scouting and setup sometimes end up with only a few birds on the ground, but there are days when the stars align and everything comes together. Many times, these days are when you least expect it. The 2014 spring snow goose migration was riddled with cold weather and snow that left the snow goose migration behind schedule. Since the geese were slow in heading north, many of them took different migration routes than normal. After battling snow geese and the elements in Illinois, we were finally able to catch up with the birds in Nebraska and had a great hunt during a migration day on a day we least expected it.

Squaw Creek was holding 1.6 million birds in late February. We headed out to join up with Scott Madison who guides for Show Me Snow Geese for a short 1.5 day hunt. The snow geese were everywhere! Large flocks would fly over and a few birds would break out of each flock. Despite the horrible weather, we managed to put down 84 snow geese in just a short day and a half with two guns.

We had hopes of ending our duck season in the south zone in Illinois at Ryne's place, but just as the rest of the season had gone, plans seldom worked during this duck season. With no ducks nor Canada Geese around, Ryne and buddy Scott Madison located some snow geese in southern Illinois and gained access to a feeding field. We knew it would be a challenge during the regular season since we were limited to mouth calling, but the scouting, knocking on doors, and hard work with hundreds of decoys led to excellent weekend!

The 2013-2014 duck and goose hunting season has been one to remember! Much of the country has been plagued by above normal temperatures the past couple years leading to hit and miss waterfowl hunting success. The stars aligned this year and numerous arctic cold fronts combined with snow to produce an incredible waterfowl hunting season for much of the country. Ducks and geese made it further south than they have for a number of years. This is the first of our Season 3 duck and goose hunting videos that will provide a look into our hunting across the Mississippi and Central Flyways. For the latest migration updates, waterfowl product reviews, informative duck and goose hunting articles, and our videos visit fowledreality.com.

Snow goose hunting had dominated our January and what better way to end the waterfowl season than to do some more snow goose and speck hunting in southern Illinois with champion goose caller Mike Smothers. We had an awesome setup in a field filled with sheetwater. Geese and ducks were everywhere! We had a great hide and awesome calling which led to a great end of the season killing snow geese!

Snow geese are tough birds to hunt without the use of an ecaller. We had had some good success through January hunting them with every man in a blind blowing a call, but now it was time to put our calls away and let the electronics do the work! In this episode, we finally get to Snow Goose hunt with the ecaller during the opening day of the Snow Goose Conservation Season.
