Excerpt from an experimental art film by artist Nara Peek-Silva. The only way we can achieve happiness is by trusting in and responding to our positive instincts, from love and for happiness, even if it repulses other people. This project is an attempt to inspire individuals and society at large to take steps toward an authentic state of being. This body of work explores ideals of the self, inhibition and insecurity, freedom and expression of the individual; how it is smothered by fear and is affected by a heightened level of self consciousness brought about by the presence of the camera in this age of surveillance and multi-faceted public forums (the street, the media, the internet etc). In this project, the pro-filmic world and the film itself become a haven of expression and freedom. A world in which the subjects rebel against self-consciousness and judgment in the name of fun, authenticity and self expression. My hope is that when the film is viewed this freedom and expression infects the viewer. Nara Peek-Silva © Peekart.com

We are 2 Egyptian girls, studying Media Design in Egypt. This blog "http://expressmailegypt.wordpress.com/" is dedicated to our project which deals mainly with snail mail. We love regular mail and letters; Why? Simply because we believe its more personal and expressive than the new means of communication as well as each letter is in itself unique. It’s obvious that with the evolution of technology, traditional means of communication are diminishing and communication has become more digital than individual. This is why we created this video in 2011 inviting people to take part in our small social/artistic experiments to revive snail mail. We want to use letters to discuss interesting topics, express different opinions, share personal experiences, and simply to make time for things that matters and forgotten. Basically we wanted people to take part in a social experiment to share their experiences, express themselves, and by that impact other people’s lives. Our first topic was about "change", we sent out letters randomly and asked people around to send us a post mail; expressing their opinion, thoughts, memories, anything related to the topic. We then collected up to 30 inspiring and touching letters and still hoping to exhibit them to reach more people and impact their lives too. We hope one day to continue this project and sustain it so that it would be a platform for people to express themselves and let out all some of their daily energy in a more concrete analogue form. Be part of this experience, and wait for our next topic, it is all about sharing. The small things are what matters most! Here is a small description of our first topic in 2011 "At the current time, many changes are taking place around us, not just in the country but within ourselves. Everyone has been influenced by some recent event and has been altered by it. What we need of you is to reveal a certain change that took place in you life. It could be personal or is related to a certain incident. Express this change though any means you find suitable, the only condition is to send it in an envelope by mail. You are free to write, draw, take a picture, stick something or find any other creative way, what is important is that you are innovative and get your voice through." This project was a research project in our 10th semester at the German university in Cairo in 2011. Me and Heba El Kest were inspired by the role of Snail Mail in Germany after our one semester exchange there. This video is a documentation about the project, there is also a motion graphics video inviting and encouraging people to participate in this artistic social experiment. With the growing popularity of digital media and technology, the usage of traditional means of communication slowly became less and less popular, one of these traditional methods is mail. In efforts to bring back its usage, this experiment was conducted. This social intervention aims to revive the usage of the snail mail in Egypt, and trigger the bottled creativity of Egyptian citizens, by tackling a certain topic. By the help of mail, the intervention tool, their opinion, and personal experience would be expressed through an interactive exhibition. The main purpose of this research is to experiment with the relation between technology and traditional means of communication, especially snail mail. Writing letters and postal mail are old fashioned type of communication, yet very powerful and personal. This social/artistic experiment tries to draw people's attention to the advantages of regular mail, and tries to touch their lives, just by sharing personal experiences. Nowadays, our life has become more and more digitalized, thanks to the rapid integration of technology in everything around us. Certainly, technology has made good impact on the field of communication. However, life became more and more busy and people don't have enough time to personally communicate with each other. Therefore, a small artistic experiment was conducted to revive snail mail and personal communication. This ongoing project would aim to help people to use tangible material once more to express themselves, for the importance of tactile sensations in perceiving informations as well as feelings. The experiment would consist of a series of topics over the year on which people should express themselves and communicate that by sharing their experiences with other people. http://www.guc-md.com/index.php/Students/SSMI10G13

Skidmore wanted to give students trying to choose a college more to go on than the usual admissions blather. So we created a series of "social experiment" videos where we set up a situation then let the cameras roll. In this video, Skidmore wanted to find out whether kids would give up or break through a 100-pound block of ice on a cold winter day to win money for a favorite charity.
