Rothar is a volunteer based community group. They have a team of around 15 volunteers who are central to their work promoting cycling and increasing bike recycling. The volunteer team run the shop, help with the Fix Your Own Bike sessions, dismantle non-repairable bikes, sort, save and stock salvaged parts, represent Rothar during events as well as a lot more! Rothar was created in May 2008. Anne came up with the idea in the beginning of 2008, she was surprised at the amount of bicycles abandoned and damaged in Dublin streets. As a cyclist (and passionate about bicycles) it was difficult for her to see that bicycles were considered disposable. She experienced the lack of cheap and quality second hand bicycles available in Dublin, and the costs of repairs that go along with owning a bicycle, making cycling difficult for people with limited financial resources. She decided to combine her environmental awareness with her desire for real social inclusion via a medium - the bicycle. Rothar aims to break isolation by providing a cheap mode of transport, by providing the possibility to gain skills to repair bicycles and access to workstations and tools, and by developing an ecofriendly mentality that would go against the “throwawayism” that still prevails in Ireland. The amount of volunteer help given is massive and they wouldn't be the same without them. **Chosen to be screened at the Kerry Bicycle Festival.
