    • From Bright Idea to a Rural Solar-Powered Classroom

      from 3BL Media / Added

There are real challenges to making robust, functional ICT (information and communication technology) accessible to students in rural areas. “We’ve found a way to bridge the gap by looking at the problem collaboratively and combining the expertise of several local NGOs (non-government organizations) with Dell technology,” Deb Bauer, director of strategic giving and community engagement at Dell says. Bauer’s team manages Dell’s Youth Learning program, one of Dell’s strategic giving programs. Today, students at State Senior High School in rural Nigeria benefit from that collaboration within a whole new learning environment: a refurbished shipping container with computers and the internet – powered by the sun and donated Dell Wyse energy-efficient technology.

The Solar-powered Cyber Café for Africa uses four laptops for the cafe computers. We selected Dell D620 laptop computers and installed Ubuntu Linux on each, while retaining Windows as a fallback. The version of Ununtu pictured in this video is 11.04 Natty Narwhal, although the computers in the actual internet cafe are running 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. Cybercafé testing took place in Austin, Texas, and the prototype internet café is being deployed in N'Djamena, Chad, in the heart of Africa. This video was produced by Chad Now. from The New School / Added

Students from Parsons The New School for Design, Milano The New School for Management and Urban Policy, and Stevens Institute of Technology have teamed up to compete in the Solar Decathlon, a biennial competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy that challenges college teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses to be exhibited on the National Mall. Taking the competition beyond the mall and into the community, the team is partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Washington D.C. and the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development to create affordable housing in the northeastern DC neighborhood of Deanwood, where the solar-powered house will live following the competition as part of a two-family home being built from the ground up in Deanwood. In September 2010, the team hosted a "site-warming" event at the Deanwood site to introduce the project to the community.
