          • X1.4 Solar Flare, SEP, and Earth-directed CME - NASA Goddard Space Weather Center

from NASAGoddard Space Weather Center Added 97 0 0

http://swc.gsfc.nasa.gov - On July 12, 2012 Active Region 1520 produced a long duration X1.4 class solar flare (peaking at 16:52 UT), and was associated with an Earth-directed CME (Coronal Mass Ejection), and Solar Energetic Particle event. Based on preliminary heliospheric modeling carried out at NASA GSFC Space Weather Center, it is estimated that the CME may impact Earth, Messenger, Spitzer, MSL, Mars. Simulations indicate that the leading edge of the CME will reach Earth at about 2012-07-14T10:20Z (plus minus 7 hours). The roughly estimated expected range of the geomagnetic storm Kp index is 6-8 (moderate to severe). Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events were detected at SOHO, GOES, and STERO B starting on July 12, 2012 17:50 UT) due to this flare and associated CME. Updates will be provided when available. • Huge M5.6 Solar Flare and Plasma Spray on July 2, 2012

                      from Viljo Nylund Added 124 0 0

An animation of the images of the M5.6 flare and the dark plasma spray captured in the AR11515 area on July 2, 2012. I captured a series of 12 images for the animation at roughly 4 minutes interval during the event for about 40 min. The uneven capture timing was imposed by cloud gaps and turbulence. The max. of the flare was at 10:52 UT so it happened between the first two animation frames. The capture times for the animation frames are: 10:50 - 10:54 -10:58 -11:04 -11:08 -11:14 -11:18 -11:20 -11:24 -11:26 -11:30 -11:44 UT. The images were captured at 2130 mm EFL, using a TS 102/1100 mm refractor, rear H-alpha etalon filter, Coronado BF10, Barlow 1.6x, Basler acA1300-30gm camera. Imaged at my Photon Collector Observatory in southern Finland.
