    • Project Adrift: the secret world of space junk

      from Cath Le Couteur Added

A lost spatula. Dead satellites. 27,000 pieces of space junk swirling above our heads. In what way, if at all, can unseen objects, adrift in space, be made to connect with our experience on earth? Adrift is an audio visual project created by Cath Le Couteur and Nick Ryan, that tells the story of hidden space junk, through a film, a sound installation and interactive artwork which connects audiences individually via live data, to the intangible – thousands of pieces of space junk orbiting above our heads. We will be launching 'Adrift' in it's entirety, September 2015. @projectadrift @thespacearts

      • Waste of Space, by Eve Andree Laramee

from Eve Andree Laramee (Netherzone) Added 49 0 0

Waste of Space points to the poetic science of Johannes Kepler who decentered our notions of the cosmos through his radical theories of astronomy and harmonics. Kepler is reconceptualized on metaphorical, historical, cosmological and environmental levels. Contrasting the spectrum from his cosmos of harmonic interactions of objects in space, to the disharmony of colliding space junk (orbital debris.) Images from his treatise, Harmonices Mundi, and photographs of shadows cast by these diagrams, are superimposed onto footage from the Kepler Space Telescope, launched to search for habitable Earth-like planets. A third layer of meaning is added: the problem of radioactive orbital debris, and its potential impact on life on Earth as it reenters Earth's atmosphere.

We're total litterbugs. Here on Earth, and out in space. What are some strategies that have been developed to clean up all that junk in space and make it safer to explore?

An interesting topic I was allowed to shoot right after I saw the movie Gravity. The presentation by Mr. Henderson was fascinating. Although the presentation I recorded was much longer I just uploaded this 3 plus minute clip.

For the Interaction basics, we had to create a series of animations to fitting quotes. This one plays with space and the idea of atoms. It should look like a single atom from the distance, and by zooming in and manipulating the direction, revealing and hiding the quote. The code base for this sketch is from the Processing Example Sketch 'SpaceJunk'. - Behance - https://www.behance.net/gallery/14601803/Interactive-Quotes SpaceJunk - http://processing.org/examples/spacejunk.html
