Trailer for My Paths Through Dance (Mis caminos a través de la danza) showing as part of DANCE:FILM 11 on Thursday 17 November at 18.00 at the Filmhouse. Based on her memoir of the same name, the film tells the story of Mariemma, a dancer who shaped 20th Century dance in Spain. Mariemma’s paths through dance helped launching the careers of internationally renowned artists such as Antonio Canales, Enrique Morente, Elvira Andrés, Joaquín Cortés and Lola Greco amongst many others. All of her protégées appear in the film recounting their experiences alongside Mariemma and describe her invaluable contributions to dance, Spanish culture and history. A fascinating portrait of a seminal dance figure with a tale that needs to be told.

Carolina Lugo is recognized as an innovative, creative, and energetic dancer, and a critically-acclaimed choreographer. She is trained in Flamenco, classical Spanish dance, and ballet. She is a virtuouso of the castanets, an integral part of Spanish dance. Her music video of “Leyenda” is shown on the nationally broadcast show “Classical Arts Showcase.” Carolina’s training in ballet and her traditions in Flamenco and Spanish dance gives her the physical strength of movement that “seeks light and takes to the air.” Carolina and company are recognized as a company of artistic quality and creativity and are sponsored by the California Arts Council, Diablo Regional Arts Association, Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation, Zellerbach Family Foundation, California Alliance for Traditional Arts, and Longs Family Foundation. Carolina has been individually commissioned by seven symphonies to choreograph and perform excerpts and complete works from leading Spanish and French composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including The Three Cornered Hat, Boléro, Carmen, La Vida Bréve, and El Amor Brujo. All have drawn sell-out audiences and have been critically acclaimed. Carolina and company have been presented in concert by symphonies and opera companies such as the Los Angeles Opera, California Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Reno Philharmonic, Diablo Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, Camellia Symphony, Mendocino Orchestra at the Mendocino World Musical Festival, Golden Gate Opera Company, and internationally with the Zhejiang Dance and Opera Company in China. She is the recipient of the prestigious 2006 Arts and Culture Award from the Contra Costa County Arts and Culture Commission in recognition of her outstanding involvement and contributions to the arts and for her lifetime achievement in the arts. The uniqueness of Carolina’s & Carole’s working relationship emanates from the mother-daughter connection. Dance critic Ann Murphy of the Oakland Tribune said it best in her review of one of their performances: “It is when Lugo and her daughter Carolé dance together that the women unearth a new dimension in dance, prompting a dialogue with the audience about beauty, life cycles, love and death.” Peña Pachamama Cultural Center started co- presenting the company in a monthly Sunday Flamenco performance that was so successful that it has become a weekly tradition. Carolé Acúña (Principal Dancer) is Carolina’s daughter and a fifth-generation dancer in her family. She began her studies in Flamenco with Rosa Montoya and in Spanish dance with Carolina Lugo at the age of 11. She has studied with Flamenco artists Manuel Betanzos, Omayra Amaya, Antonio Vargas and Concha Vargas from Spain. She is the Bay Area’s most prominent young Flamenco dance artist. In 1996, at 15 years of age, she made her professional debut with Rosa Montoya’s Bailes Flamencos and continues to perform regularly with Brisas de España as a principal dancer with various symphonies and at venues throughout the Bay Area, and as a soloist with other Bay Area Flamenco artists. She is thoroughly trained in ballet and studies modern dance with Cheryl Chaddick and Robert Moses in San Francisco. Carolé recently returned from Seville, Spain, where she studied extensively for six months with renowned Flamenco artist, Pepa Montes. She has recently become co-director of the company. Daniel Fríes one of most gifted Bay Area guitarists will be our Music Director for this year's concert season, which will be his second time serving in this role. The first time was in the 2002 concert production. He has performed numerous times in our spring presentations and in our nightclub venue performances.

The totality of Spanish dance includes Spanish Classical {Escuela Bolera}, Neo-Classical, Regional dances and Flamenco. The art of the castanets is an integral part of Classical Spanish dance and the castanets are sometimes used in Flamenco dances such as Sevillanas, Fandangos de Huelva, to name a few. The importance of Spanish dance and its connection to Flamenco is in danger of being lost in America. Carolina is committed to preserving this art form by continuing to present important works by leading Spanish composers of the 20th Century such as Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Isaac Albeniz and Geronimo Gimenez. The company has performed nationally and internationally to sell out audiences and standing ovations with outstanding programming. The excitement is very present in Ballet Flamenco's performances with the California Symphony Reno Philharmonic Peninsula Symphony Diablo Symphony Mendocino Music Festival Orchestra Camilla Symphony Golden Gate Opera Company Hangzhou Opera & Dance Company, China
