(Aired on May 27, 2015 on NY1 and Time Warner Cable News North Carolina) NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- A group of 16 students from New York are in the running to be the nation’s next spelling champ. They’re competing at the National Spelling Bee, which is happening just outside the nation’s capital. Check on their progress throughout the spelling bee here. The youngest contestant is just nine years old; the oldest is 15, but all of the 285 students are seasoned spelling bee pros. The competition includes both onstage spelling and offstage multiple choice tests. The students rely on a range of word-spelling strategies. Shashwat Patel, a 7th grader from Orange County, New York has his. “I look at the different languages and see their patterns, so that helps with words from certain origins.” “I pretend to write them on my placard and that really helps me stabilize my spelling," said Sai Chandrasekhar, an 8th grader from Flushing, Queens. The young wordsmiths say they spend hours studying the spelling patterns of different languages, especially Greek and Latin, and they say they have their favorites. “Reverie. It’s like a fantasy... a really pretty word," said Sai. "One word I find unusual is anatidaephobia -the fear that somewhere, somehow there is a duck, and that duck is watching you," said Shashwat. "My favorite word I guess would be syzygy," said Akshra Paimagam, a 6th grader from Charlotte, North Carolina. “It means when three celestial bodies are aligned.” Each student hoping those stars are aligned in their pursuit of the sweetest word of all: victory. The winner goes home with more than $35,000 in cash and other prizes.
