It is time to reign in corporation so that they serve people, not the other way around. In Spokane, corporations are given the same legal rights as naturally born people even though there is nothing natural about them. Combine corporate legal rights with enormous corporate wealth and all of us naturally born people lose our ability to create communities that reflect our values. Prop. 1 would eliminate corporate “personhood” and other legal protections from corporations who violate the community’s rights. It’s simple - we can’t protect our rights within our neighborhoods, the health of the river and aquifer, and our rights in the workplace as long as corporate rights outweigh ours.

Today, corporate developers have more rights than our neighborhoods. Just ask residents who have fought against unwanted development in neighborhoods like Southgate, West Central, Five Mile, and Latah-Hangman, among others. Prop. 1 would require developers to obtain neighborhood approval for zoning changes involving significant development. It means residents, not developers, would have the final say. Prop. 1 would also allow neighborhood residents to veto significant development that violates the City’s own Comprehensive Plan or Charter. Simply put, if the proposed significant development violates the City’s own rules, we the people, would have the power to say no. Prop. 1 requires developers to be responsive to concerns of residents. Prop. 1 empowers neighborhoods to protect their property values and quality of life against zoning changes that would threaten them.

Today, despite our environmental laws, the Spokane River is chock full of nasty pollutants and our aquifer – which provides drinking water and river recharge - is squeezed daily by unsustainable water withdrawals. Prop. 1 would establish the highest protections for the River and Aquifer – recognizing their rights to exist; it then provides for us – as Spokane residents – the ability to enforce those rights. Prop. 1 is about living within our means, so that we leave behind a healthy river and aquifer for future generations.

Cross the threshold into a private workplace and POOF!, your constitutional rights disappear. It’s true. Gone go your First, Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendment rights, but not so for corporate employers. Here in Spokane, Prop. 1 would secure federal and state constitutional protections in all workplaces, and the right to collectively bargain in unionized workplaces. We shouldn’t lose our constitutional rights when we go to work, and collective bargaining is an inherent right that shouldn’t be messed with.

Why are you here? Photographs by Jim Van Gundy Opening October 7th, 2011 - 5-9pm Clearstory Gallery at Life Center 1202 N. Government Way Spokane, WA "It's funny how we live. Maybe it's just me. So full of answers, when what matters are the questions. Like do I matter to the people in my neighborhood? In my town? Do they matter to me? Should they? Now ask the same things about those living halfway around the world. My short time in Ethiopia brought me face to face with THE question, "Why are you here?" I invite you to ask your own questions. - Jim Van Gundy http://www.clearstorygallery.com/ Clearstory Gallery is a Fine Arts Gallery on the Life Center Campus near Spokane Falls Community College. Connecting to God through the influence of image, color, form, through pure adoration of God in the reality, beauty, power of art.

The editing is a bit rough because I lack patience with the speed of my computer, the video itself is rough because I lack a smooth-panning tripod.
