I Produced and Directed this video. Unfortunately, Florida has one of the highest rates in the country, with thousands of children living in shelters, motels, cars, or even the street. Sports 4 The Kids, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, works with the local Seminole Country Public Schools Families in Transition Program to help identify these children and reach out to them with after-school recreational opportunities. It is estimated that there are roughly 9,000 homeless children living in the Tri-County area (Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties) who attend public school. Without programs like ours, their athletic potential may never be realized. We strongly believe that participation in sports will help these children develop healthy interpersonal relationships and social skills, improve their self-esteem, introduce them to new friends, enhance their physical well-being, and provide opportunities for them to stay motivated and active despite challenging personal circumstances. It also creates opportunities for these children to receive college scholarships, or in some cases, launch a career as a professional athlete. We believe that “every child deserves a chance to participate,” and we will strive to provide the means to make it happen. Our hope is to be able to offer recreational opportunities to the roughly 1.5 million homeless children living in the United States.

Misha Simmonds of University Heights Charter School in Newark, NJ, has been honored as Playworks’ Most Valuable Principal. University Heights students at the school describe him as “silly, a great player, a good teacher and above all else, fun.” In addition to his outstanding mentorship and communications with the Playworks staff, Mr. Simmonds plays with the kids on the playground and is one of the fastest adults ever to “turn over as many cones as possible during a game of Bulldozers and Builders. “Mr. Simmonds embodies the power of play and its transformative ability to enhance the culture of a school,” says Playworks Newark Executive Director Adeola Whitney. “While he is a serious educator and has made remarkable improvements and strides at the school, he has done so with a smile and by getting out on the playground to ensure his students are active and engaged at recess. He’s truly committed to play.”
