Ballerinas paraded across the catwalk, opening the show in neon marble prints, and musical-note print-jumpsuits. Hair and make-up held a strong presence throughout the show, with models projecting bright orange wigs and porcelain doll makeup. Inspired by Mozart's "The Magic Flute", Italian born Carlotta's theme shines throughout each piece, with gowns representing the costumes worn by Papageno and Papagena in the famed-opera. Although dealing with a concept fundamentally negative, Carlotta injected vibrancy into a less-so theme, with neon bright caged-dresses; their detail emphasising the feminine form.

A soothing oriental soundtrack played over an expressive video for the opening of Ji Cheng’s ‘Teaism’ collection. The film depicted the global significance of tea culture, highlighting that the once ancient Chinese tradition of tea making has grown into a worldwide practice. Cheng’s Spring/Summer 13 collection takes inspiration from the unifying quality of tea culture, which has travelled from East to West, uniting different cultures along its path. In a similar manner, Cheng unites East and West by blending the Eastern theme of tea with Western tailoring.

The beat of the music resonating around the room echoed the robust architecture of Ancient Greece, which featured as a significant source of inspiration for Krystof Strozyna’s Spring/Summer collection 13. The iconic architecture of Ancient Greece spurred Strozyna’s structured shoulders, and high waisted, column-like trousers. This architectural theme continued through Strozyna’s incorporation of print, motivated by the work of Piranesi. Fine-line prints of buildings reminiscent of Piranesi’s architectural etchings sat upon silks, and cotton mixes.

Playful illustrations of grandma's adorned jumpers, skirts and dresses; candy stripes, and block pastels were the main choice of primary palette for Fam Irvoll's Spring/ Summer offering. Chiffon and lace piqued the playfulness, whilst bringing the feminine element forward. The 50’s shone through this collection; Fam’s whimsical, childhood elements are still a firm inspiration in her designs. White sheer skirts, with cut-out shapes matched woolen jumpers- all printed with retro illustrations. The line work and attention to detail within the illustrations brought out the lightness of Fam’s knits.

It was a rumbling bass that set the atmosphere of the S/S13 collection from Dans La Vie by Rira Sugawara. Building into a crescendo of electronic music, as soon as the garments emerged, they brought the room to life. In the designer's third catwalk collection, the runway was soon filled with the iconic prints the label has become known for. Aptly named 'Moving Print Bodies', the garments embodied just that. Filled with bodysuits, reptilian skin prints and a diverse mix of materials, the garments were a true combination of feminine clinched-in waists, chequered details and dramatic peplums.

Simpson graduated this year with an MA in ‘Fashion Design Technology’ from London College of Fashion, having previously completed a BA Fashion degree at Northumbria University. Demonstrating the subtle beauty that can be achieved with a pastel colour palette, Charlotte Simpson’s debut collection for Vauxhall Fashion Scout was a celebration of understated elegance and wearable-luxury. Her use of light materials allowed for clean draping, and a fluidity as the models progressed along the catwalk; this movement was retained throughout the collection. Combined with the plunging necklines, the femininity of the material perfectly offset the androgyny of the trouser suits and square-cut dresses.

Autumn/ Winter Merit Award winner, Phoebe English has experienced somewhat of a media storm since winning the coveted award, so it's understandable that this was one of the most anticipated shows of the season. The Central Saint Martins MA grad consistently presents work featuring innovative textile treatments, formerly layering hair, and fraying calico. Opening the show, two very similarly dressed models walked through the iron-grate doorway simultaneously in contrasting black and cream shifts- in keeping with English's former monochromatic signature- seemingly going to back to black for Spring/ Summer. The inspiration - 'Intimate shells and exploring the intimacy between things' and 'Organic forms complied in geometric arrangements'. This silhouettes were thoughtfully crafted and cut, but simple in terms of colour and lack of stitching but this only allowed the embellishments to be more stunning. The accessories were inspired but not overdone, sharp spike metal collars and mouthpieces, creating a sense of almost armoury. These hard, solid shapes were contrasted with the delicate bugle bead work constructed on geometric grids that, with both the light reflecting off of them and their loose construction, allowed movement as the garments made their way down the runway. http://thefashionscoutsept09.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/collection-phoebe-english-ss13.html

Hellen Van Rees’ Ones To Watch collection of distinct three-dimensional weaved cubes adorning traditional womenswear pieces concluded the for Ones to Watch designer showcase. The handmade crafted textile, which consists of one hundred percent recycled materials, formed a collection directly inspired by Chanel tweeds and artworks by Anish Kapoor and Rachel Whitbread. Despite their presence being overwhelming to the eye, worn as headwear, cuffs and shoulder details, the underlying 1920s silhouette was feminine and slick.

As the clock struck eleven, midnight magic flooded the Hana Cha catwalk, her monochromatic fringed collection sashaying with soft movement. Reinventing the masculine trouser suit with silks and dip dyed chiffons, harrowing string music accompanied models that wore their hair in professional tousled buns at the nape of their neck. Innocent scatters of star shaped embellishment and flecks of ink softened the ying-yang vision, paying homage to a twinkling night sky. Against bare arms and oversized cuffs, fringing naturally swayed about the body, mirrored by overly long garment belts tied loosely at the hip. Our eyes were continually being encouraged to acknowledge the entire female form.
