Some argue magazines and newspapers may be close to extinction. How will they survive sociocultural evolutions in contemporary media, and new technological formats and delivery systems that are constantly changing? What role can designers and journalists play in driving 21st-century transformations of 20th-century media in the age of Twitter, and how has this changed the nature of their jobs? Arem Duplessis, Design Director of the New York Times Magazine, will discuss these and other questions with local guests Bryan Erickson, Design Director, Chicago Magazine & Mara Shalhoup, Editor, The Chicago Reader. A public conversation with Michael Coleman, joined by key collaborators to present work rooted in the Chicago design community. Michael Coleman is an Art Director, Graphic Designer, and Printmaker currently residing in Los Angeles. He was a print design apprentice before the advent of the internet, occupying his high school years cutting rubylith films, key-lining paste-ups and bootlegging tshirts. Fortified by ink-under-nails press work, early ‘90s street culture and a keen dedication to Modernism, he received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he remained for several years post-graduation as an instructor of Visual Communications. His studio provides art direction and graphic design for clients such as Time Out, Girl Skateboards, Fourstar Clothing Company, (RED), Punk Planet Magazine, The Black Keys and Warner Brothers Records. He was the co-founder of Foundation Gallery, a Chicago-based gallery which exhibited the work of printmakers such as Jay Ryan, Aesthetic Apparatus and Serigraphie Populaire. Michael has also curated a number of printmaking exhibitions, includingOFF-REGISTER: a survey of contemporary printmaking that traveled nationally throughout 2007-2008, and GIG: a contemporary survey of poster makers inspired by the archives of WB Records exhibited at the iconic WB Records headquarters in Burbank, CA. His own serigraphs, abstract explorations of urban landscapes, have been exhibited internationally. A selection of these prints was recently published in PULLED!: A catalog of screen printing (Princeton Architectural Press). • A Grass Fire Right By Eastridge Mall in San Jose, CA! (5-3-13)

This video shows a grass fire burning in an open, scrubby field just by the Eastridge Mall loop area, just off Quimby Rd and Capitol Expressway. When I was just starting my late afternoon routine to water my garden when suddenly I saw a large plume of dark smoke to the west...I got super curious and drove towards the smoke... It turned out that the fire was in that large empty, grassy field just off Capitol Expressway. Heavy traffic was also caused by the grass fire scenario, both on Quimby Rd and Capitol. There were lots of fire trucks parked where I was standing just along Quimby Rd. Luckily the winds weren't that strong so they were able to contain the fire with no difficulty. I also added some new broadcasters in the background explaining the current scenario at the time. There was a helicopter dropping water on the flames, getting water from the nearby Lake Cunningham. I later went back home as it neared 7:30 p.m., the same time when they confirmed that the fire was fully contained. I drove southward along Capitol Expressway to see the progress of the grass fire. Hardly any smoke so it was indeed contained but the fire fighters and officials were staying through the evening to continue to monitor the scene just in case. I then also decided to see the sunset from up by near EVHS to end this very warm, "fiery" afternoon in Silicon Valley...photos from this event was shown in the remainder of the video. More info about this fire: *This grass fire had occurred near Eastridge Mall along Capitol Expressway/Quimby Rd. The fire started around 6 p.m. and winds in the area were clocked at 15 mph. The grass fire consumed more than 30 acres of a scrubby field near the mall, sending up a huge plume of smoke that could be seen across the whole valley. There were more than 60 firefighters that was sent to the growing blaze. They were assisted by Cal Fire, which sent ground crews and attacked the blaze from above with a water-dropping helicopter, getting the water from Lake Cunningham. At 7:30 p.m., the fire was contained. The smoke was blowing away from the shopping center, so the mall was not affected. This was a reminder for residents to take to cut down dry weeds around their homes. Fire officials have issued warnings about a long & potentially dangerous fire season due to an unusually dry winter and spring we had already. Song: Ho Hey by the Lumineers Producer: Aidan Carroll Navigator: Aidan Carroll Editing decisions: Aidan Carroll This was the maiden flight of the TBS Caipirinha. It's a 1.5lb EPP foam wing designed to be the lightest, quietest, safest wing. Any little turbulence shakes it up though, and there's one really good thermal that shows this at 1:05. The Caipirinha's CG was at 135mm from the tip. 100g of steel weights under the GoPro were used to bring it forward, but this is now too nose-heavy.
