An illustration of the incompatibility of snowmobiles and ski touring. These guys were skilled riders and fun to watch, but they destroyed the entire Clara basin for skiing until at least the next storm. Sunday March 9, 2014. Several riders from 9:00AM when I arrived until past 2:00PM when I left.

Feb 28 at White Pass. Spring corn tinkle tour on south facing slopes across the street from the ski area. We started skiing just as the sun crust was melting off and we quit when the sun went down and the crust re-developed. Torch-light parade and fireworks viewed from our couch topped a great day.

Scott, Aaron, Randy and the crew slay this underground line after spying it the whole year. We waited for just the right time to hit it one day after work. Scott & Aaron started off with a few extra turns above the line while waiting for the rest of the crew. There were perfect spring corn conditions. None of us had actually been up or down the line, so we were not sure what we were in for, especially if there were any mandatory cliff drops or similar. We were greeted by sparse snow at the bottom which did require some serious survival ski talent. Randy captured everything with 1,500 photos on his GoProFail. Tyler and I stated early and made it to the summit of the Emerald Bay chute by 9 am. we then waited about a half hour for the snow to corn up on this south facing 40+ degree chute. The corn was perfect until the very bottom where it started to get heavy. With much of the day remaining we decided to hike and ski the south ramp of Jakes. On this south east facing slope we again found perfect corn, but this time we were able to open up the speed as the consequences of falling were much less severe All in all we bagged over 4 thousand feet of hiking and skiing really good spring corn. Point of view: Josh Senning. Skier in grey helmet: Tyler Boutelle. April 11, 2011.

Went on a Desolation tour on 3/22/10, hoping to find some wintery snow or chalk but the heavy winds the previous few days took care of that. All north facing aspects were pretty much blown out, either firm or had a small crust layer on top. We focused on the South facing corn aspects, but it was a little tricky with the wind still blowing. The top and middle was decent corn, but there were some firm pockets mixed in. Found a mini-golf pretty steep chute on the crest, and just glorious fields of corn below. THis is basically one run from the crest down to Lake Tahoe.

Late spring corn, touring at Temple Basin, New Zealand, 30 October 2009. Skier: Duncan Sherratt Music: Boards of Canada. 2009 has been a great ski season in New Zealand. No shortage of powder days. The steady supply of stormy weather through the winter ensured a good spring corn harvest. With all the ski areas closed and the sun shining, Saturday 30 October was inevitably an earn-yer-turns day. A hike into Temple Basin and a couple of telemark ski runs. Spot the NIWA snow pack measuring team.
