1. Why We're Here: Twin Cities

from Seven and Sixty Productions / Added

With all the possibilities around the world, what is the “it” that keeps people here in the Twin Cities? We suspected the answer to the question "Why We're Here" was both simple and incredibly nuanced -- worthy of art. We took our camera to the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul to find people willing to talk, unscripted, on film. The result is our collective love poem to the Twin Cities. Why We're Here: Twin Cities is a six-minute film that explores what unites us, and unites us here, in the Twin Cities. Filmed on location the spring and summer of 2010 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the film features an original score by John Munson of the New Standards, the Twilight Hours, Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare, camerawork by Adam Olson and editing by Sam Heyn. Visit www.sevenandsixty.com to post your response and tell us, with all the possibilities that exist in the world, why you’re living where you do. • St. Paul Xcel Energy High Bridge Coal Plant Smoke Stack Implosion

Xcel energy is upgrading with a significantly lower emission power plant. A 550 foot high smoke stack weighing a bit over 11 million pounds built 36 years ago part of St. Paul’s cityscape was brought down today. I had checked a few locations to shoot this photographically with the help of others, taking into consideration the excursion zone which police would close off to the public and block traffic. I choose Cliff road as the closest spot that would be open to public, but, I guess, some were just below me I saw on the train tracks. Cliff road runs parallel overlooking Shepard road just below which was closed off for good reason. I had a few reservations if it was wise being so close to such a massive structure being brought down with high explosives, it passed 2 seconds latter. Hundreds lined the streets, the Smith Avenue High bridge to Harriet Island and other locations. There’s a certain inhuman quality to running 26 miles, it's inspiring! I created this piece in hopes capturing the reverence and awe I feel when I watch people flood across the finish line. The video was shot at 720 frames-per-second on a high speed Fastec TS3. I blogged about the technical aspects of making this video here: http://blogs.twincities.com/flashgarvin/2014/10/09/how-i-made-a-super-slow-motion-video/ Thanks for watching, -Ben

                from Ben Stone / Added

Yesterday we had a few snow flurries, which for some Minnesotans is like a precipitous wake-up alarm (without the benefit of a 4 month snooze). Therefor, I decided I'd better get some footage before the snow makes a beautiful mess of things. This is a fun view of St. Paul, since you can see the state capitol to the far right, with the curvaceous Mississippi at front and center. There's also plenty of cars, trains, boats and planes cruising around. I would have filmed for longer (that tugboat was just getting started!), but it was freezing cold, and I had gallons of hot cider waiting for me at home... mmmm! The music is "Stars" by musical uber-genius, Ulrich Schnauss. I tried to sync the flashing First Bank sign to the rhythm, but it still seems a little off. It also appears that there are some slowing blinking street lights, dancing away, oblivious to the beat. (why do I feel such affinity to those uncoordinated street lights?)

We've seen some experimental brewing here on Brewing TV, but nothing like this. Our buddies at Lift Bridge Brewing Company get shellacious on an Oyster Stout. And they aren't holding anything back. The boiling wort had shells, oyster meat and the briniest of the briny juice thrown in! Join us for an awesome brew day and an oyster festival where the beer is served alongside the best oysters the county has to offer. All for brine, brine for all! Nice Ride MN is a hit. The Twin Cities bike share recently celebrated its one year anniversary in June. And in July they started an expansion by adding more stations and bicycles to the network. We talked with Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak who told us about how they got Nice Ride MN off the ground: "We were gonna have to build a really big system. So I went to Blue Cross and I said we wanna do this. It's gonna be a major health initiative it's gonna cost $3 million dollars, we need you to put up a million dollars. And they looked at it, and looked at it, and they said 'yes'....I was totally blown away. And then we leveraged another million and a half from a federal grant - and again, this was Oberstar - so we got that $2.5 million." "But then because it was such a huge success Blue Cross invested another million more and we got [other organizations contributing]." Of course any public bike share system offers its own unique challenges and is gonna need support from the community to be a success. Thanks to the Bikes Belong Foundation we're able to provide this short snapshot of the Nice Ride MN system, how it works, and where it's headed.
