    • Ron Moen - Deming's Stage 0: By What Method?

      40:20

from The Deming Institute / Added

The 2014 Fall Conference presents Ron Moen In 1993 Dr. W. Edwards Deming added “Stage 0: Generation of Ideas” to his famous 1950 flow diagram “Production viewed as a system” in the second edition of his book “The New Economics.” He said “The 0-th stage is the place for ideas and brainstorming, to avoid so far as possible changes in direction and backtracking in later stages. Changes in direction cost more and more with each stage.” Unfortunately, he did not explicitly define a method for accomplishing Stage 0. The aim of Stage 0 is to generate ideas for innovation. This paper evaluates the most popular methods for innovation and idea generation using Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge (SoPK). A detailed method for Stage 0 is proposed that uses SoPK as its foundation. Steps for the proposed method include define need, observe, generate ideas, synthesize and screen ideas.

I gave my first talk on motion control time lapse over at WGW Studios in early March. Not as well attended as I'd have liked but you work with what you have and you don't fret about it.... This is short 3 axis move used the eMotimo TB3 and the Dynamic Perception Stage 0 Dolly. Normally I would have set the camera to miss the end of the dolly track but in this case that was not germane to the demonstration.

In preparation for a talk at the Apple Store in Santa Monica, I shot a time lapse of my TB3 and Stage 0 Dolly shooting a time lapse of my backyard...some folks just have too much time on their hands... ...and since then I've since experimented with a PIP effect as I thought it'd be neat to see what the one camera was time-lapsing while it was being recorded moving along the rail.

I was commissioned by Media 360 in Long Beach, CA to document the installation of William Close's Earth Harp for a performance celebrating a renovation of the Long Beach Arena. We were given a very brief window, (4 hours on the second day) to get the desired material. I decided to go for it and brought 5 cameras and 4 motion-control devices so when inspiration hit, I hit back... 4 hours into 36 seconds.
