Over the course of several days, a huge flock of starlings flew above the Norwich City Centre each evening. What was so amazing about this is that this kind of rare phenomenon usually only happens in rural areas. This film shows four of those days, when the people of Norwich, continued to go about their business, oblivious to the incredible 'bird ballet' being performed overhead. Enjoy for yourself this stunning event.

The Stars of Carlisle tells the story of a flock of starlings that have chosen to roost over winter in Portland Square in the south of the city. As the starlings have drawn complaints from local businesses due to the mess that they make, I felt compelled to make this short documentary in order to showcase the beauty that surrounds the birds and their spectacular aerial displays known as murmurations. I hope people will question whether the starlings really are the menaces that they are made out to be, or whether they actually have a positive impact on people and on the city as a whole, making them the stars of Carlisle. The recording lasted 9 seconds. The first part of the video is an approximation of "real time". Or rather the time frame a human experiences with a visual refresh rate of 40 chemical refreshes of retina stimuli per second. This video was shot at 600 frames per second then was blended to show the "personal space" of the starling. This slows the "refresh rate" to several seconds. We often think the volume of a bird as the body with wings folded. In actually the bird must keep a bubble of space around for the space the bird occupies is with wings outstretched.

Starling murmuration nicely settled...that is until, a Sparrowhawk attacks (you can see it toward the end of the clip as it swoops from centre -> left of shot) albeit with poor results. Well worth stopping to see on cycle home from town!
