Thanksgiving day traditionally is a day where families get together to eat and give thanks to all that they have been given. The sad reality is that not everyone is fortunate enough to celebrate this holiday. This Thanksgiving, By Any Means will launch its second annual charity initiative “By Any Meals: A 5 Borough Food Drive.” Our goal is to raise enough money and collect enough non-perishable goods for at least 500 people to have a hot plate of Turkey with all the fixings, as well as a bag of food to bring home with them on Thanksgiving Day. This grassroots initiative will be funded through donations using Indiegogo’s revolutionary platform. With the gaining popularity of crowd funding platforms, such as Indiegogo, By Any Meals is able to fund feed the NYC community on Thanksgiving and align them- selves with causes dear to their hearts. A kick-off event will commence the season of giving to help by Any Means start this noteworthy initiative. Please join By Any Means in helping to feed as many hungry new Yorkers as possible this holiday season.

The First Meeting Was Held on the Distribution of Community Development Block Grants: The Staten Island New York Rising Community Reconstruction Planning Committee met this past Wednesday, September 18th, to discuss how their portion of the grants will be spent. The purpose of these block grants is to rebuild after Hurricane Sandy, and to fortify the community in preparation for another possible disaster. Maintenance Funding for Staten Island Ferry- The Staten Island Ferry service between the St. George Terminal and the Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan will be receiving $2 million in funding. Find out how they plan to use this money by watching the video. Update on the Replacement of Goethals Bridge- Construction of the brand new Goethals Bridge was originally scheduled to begin in mid-2013, but now permitting issues are causing the construction to be delayed indefinitely, with a possible start date of spring 2014. Ramp Now Open for Verrazano-Narrows Bridge- Commuters who use the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge will be seeing a few changes made to the bridge's access ramp on Lily Pond Avenue. This ramp is now open to traffic, and will have a new traffic light for drivers entering the bridge traveling southbound. Public Transportation is an Issue for West Shore Residents- The lack of adequate mass transit on Staten Island's West Shore has long been an issue for commuters. There has long been talk of a West Shore Light Rail which will connect to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, so hopefully recent efforts by the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation and the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce will bring much-needed relief in this area. Staten Island's Mid-Island Section Now Has a New Urgent Care Center: On Tuesday, September 17th, The Staten Island Heart Imaging Center opened their urgent care center in the Dongan Hills Colony Community. This East Shore facility will be a good option for residents in the community in need of urgent care, with extended hours and a convenient location on Richmond Road. The Latest "Economic Snapshot" was released for New York City: Recently the New York City Economic Development Corporation released their September 2013 Economic Snapshot, with data covering 2002-2012, as well as the past few months. New Residential Construction Update: This past week, Staten Island saw a whopping 28 residential permit acceptances. Two of these dwellings will be on the South Shore, seven will be on the north shore, and the remaining nineteen will be in Staten Island's Mid-Island section. Watch to find out which types of homes will be constructed in which neighborhoods. Upcoming Events: This week, we have a variety of great events that you should look into attending.
