    • The Story of Christopher

      from Jacob Graudin Added 1,353 4 0

St. Christopher is venerated by the Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican churches as the patron saint of travelers, modes of transportation, storms, and toothaches. While the historical Christopher lived and died in the 3rd century AD, stories about his life were not widely told until the 9th century. The best known of these stories became crystallized for posterity in Jacobus de Voragine's "The Golden Legend," a 13th century collection of saintly legends. Since then, St. Christopher's tale has been told time and time again by Christians around the world. My personal introduction to the story was through the summer camp I attended in my childhood, Camp St. Christopher on Seabrook Island, SC. My time there was deeply formative to my faith, and I found myself working there as a young adult. Although we still told the story during my time working there, concern had grown that the legend, a work of pure fiction, confused and discolored young people's perception of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Indeed, it seemed that in the original story Christopher is able to carry Jesus and all the sins of the world across a river in his own strength, something that is completely antithetical to the Gospel. My second summer working at the camp, I was presented with the opportunity to tell the legend to the campers. I wanted to tell this story in a way that would reflect God's grace and His love for the world in Jesus Christ without discarding the original tale. Having some experience in writing and performing poetry in the spoken-word style, I decided to tell the story like that, creating the portrait of a man on a journey not unlike those of Odysseus or Aeneas. Indeed, I very intentionally drew parallels between Christopher (whose original name, Opherus, means "bearer") and the epic heroes of Homer and Virgil. All of this leads to the unexpected, strange, and beautiful climax of the story, wherein Christopher meets someone he did not expect to on the riverside. At the request of Bob Lawrence, the executive director of the camp, a video of my telling of the story has been created. Please use it as you desire, but be sure to give credit to the creators and musical accompaniment. Special thanks to David Strauss of David Strauss Photography (charlestonweddingphotography.net) for shooting and editing the video, and to Hammock for the use of their ethereal melodies from "Departure Songs" to back up my words. Video was shot at Camp St. Christopher on Seabrook Island, SC.
