        • No Hope is No Reason to Stop -- Kimani Gray's Lawyer Battles for Racial Justice

          from KimaniFilm Added 47 0 0

An interview with Kenneth Montgomery, attorney for Carol Gray, mother of 16-year-old police slaying victim Kimani Gray. He shares with us the status of the case, putting it in the broader context of systemic racism and policies like "Stop and Frisk". He suggests that simply changing the policy can't solve the problem because "You can't legislate what's in people's hearts and minds." He speaks frankly about the challenges of working within the system, and the "symbiotic relationship" that exists between the district attorney's office and the police, who as he recounts, discouraged witness participation in this case by chasing away witnesses from the scene at gunpoint. He describes his personal experiences of police harassment and shares a heartbreaking recollection: The cheering, happy reaction of his colleagues to the acquittal of the police officers who killed Amadou Diallo while he was working as a prosecutor for the Brooklyn DA. Finally he inspires us by telling us what keeps him going, even without hope.

October 19, 2013: 7 months, 10 days after Kimani “Kiki” Gray was killed by undercover police, friends and family gathered to celebrate what would have been his 17th birthday. The party was held in the parking lot of Camille’s Plaza at East 55th Street and Church Avenue. A single police squad car remained stationed by the entrance. No other police made themselves visible in the immediate vicinity. There were tributes, prayers, and performances. The party was winding down and we were packing up, when someone leaving the party threw a bottle at the police car stationed outside, smashing its rear window. Within seconds, the area was swarming with police. We unpacked our cameras and resumed shooting as quickly as we could. Police attempted to break up the party, but seemed unprepared to deal with a righteously angry crowd and an activist film crew. Shot by Kelly Stuart, Atiq Zabinski and Peter Rugh; edited by Atiq Zabinski. "Monster Winer" used by permission of King Bubba and Platta Studios. Produced by: King Bubba (Adam Elias), Dwaingerous, Kerwin Du Bois. Written by: King Bubba, Lil Rick, Kerwin Du Bois, Dwaingerous. Master Ownership: King Bubba - Platta Studio
