Much adieu about nothing. Well not much anyway. In order to present a united front, I wanted to imbed my video in Mark's video. That way you can see both perspectives at the same time, as they happened in realtime. A wave came, it splashed, and came down on me. That's it. I got wet, and the world continues to turn as it should.

Dynamic Cartography is an exploration of graphic techniques to inject life and motion into maps. This piece explores using line to depict a storm surge, an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm, over and above the predicted astronomical tide.

Far Rockaway is a Harmattan Theater production. It was performed on the anniversary of 9/11 in 2013, at Tribute Park, a NYC public park that was built as a memorial tribute to the over three hundred firefighters who died in the World Trade Center in 2001. The Park was washed away by Sandy. Harmattan performed at the Park, to mark the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy on the Far Rockaway peninsular, particularly Beach 116 - on which Tribute Park is located. Beach 116 was entirely destroyed by the storm surge. Harmattan Theater thanks Mike of the wonderful Cafe Paninico for his support of the Far Rockaway project.

This documentary is focuses on the Afloat Creative Recovery project of Creative Region Ltd as a case study of how the arts can assist in community recovery after natural disasters. This project began in 2011 following the floods of 2010/2011 in the Bundaberg Region and expanded to include five local government areas after the floods, tornadoes and storm surge of January 2013.

We present a novel integrated visualization system that enables the interactive visual analysis of ensemble simulations and estimates of the sea surface height and other model variables that are used for storm surge prediction. Coastal inundation, caused by hurricanes and tropical storms, pose large risks for todays societies. High-fidelity numerical models of water levels driven by hurricane-force winds are required to redict these events, posing a challenging computational problem and even though computational models continue to improve, uncertainties in storm surge forecasts are inevitable. Today this uncertainty is often exposed to the user by running the simulation many times with different parameters or inputs following a Monte-Carlo framework in which uncertainties are represented as stochastic quantities. This results in multidimensional, multivariate and multivalued data, so-called ensemble data. While the resulting datasets are very comprehensive, they are also huge in size and thus hard to visualize and interpret. In this paper we tackle this problem by means of an interactive and integrated visual analysis system. By harnessing the power of modern graphics processing units (GPUs) for visualization as well as computation, our system allows the user to browse through the simulation ensembles in real-time, view specific parameter settings or simulation models and move between different spatial or temporal regions without delay. In addition our system provides advanced visualizations to highlight the uncertainty, or show the complete distribution of the simulations at user-defined positions over the complete time series of the prediction. We highlight the benefits of our system by presenting its application in a real world scenario using a simulation of Hurricane Ike.

The Samoa PACC project is working with the government to implement a community-based integrated coastal protection model, to increase the resilience of its coastal communities and infrastructure to the impacts of climate change. The project is working at three sites – Tafitoala village on Upolu and Lefagaoalii and Lalomalava on Savai’i Activities include re-vegetation of coastal areas, building protection structures, and community awareness, consultations and engagement. A water resource bylaw, linked to their coastal protection programme, has been formulated and endorsed for the village of Tafitoala, providing for enforcement of both water and coastal resource management at the community level by the community themselves. The Pacific Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC) project is funded by the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) and the Australian Government (AusAID), with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as its implementing agency and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) as implementing partner.
