Blogging movies scene by scene or monologue by monologue helps me solve storytelling issues. A story cannot happen unless the characters wants something. A character can want something grand or something small or something in between. The protagonist of VOICE wants something very simple that is difficult to achieve, i.e., a quiet mind where she can create art. The other two characters want something very complicated and grand, i.e., they have to escape reality in order to continue to exist because they cannot survive in a quiet mind. Conflict conflict conflict. Music: SYMPHONIE INACHEVEE, Franz Schubert, GRAND ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE, sous la direction de SELMAR MEYROWITZ (Paris, 1934). From the Public Domain on Archive.org. Sculpture: Nena St. Louis (Collection of the artist).

VOICE is an arthouse science fiction movie in progress about a woman whose voice (attached to her hindbrain) makes it possible for her travel in outer space while manic. Meanwhile, the woman in her depressed state (nicknamed La Depressa by her manic self) tries to pull herself together and back to earth.

This test scene shows the protagonist (La Depressa) in a therapy session as her Voice leads her manic self on a stroll into outer space. I have revised the proportions of five clips that make up this movie as the "real" world of the therapy session was visually squashed by huge image of the sun. I reduced the sun and the "unreal" characters's sizes and used feathering to blend the two scenes. I tried splitting the frame in half and it looked great but felt wrong. Blending them is not only my once upon a time a painter's preference, but also, I think, a stronger storytelling choice since the point of the story is La Depressa's struggle to get back the stray entities that represent her mental illness and put them back in a better place in her mind.

VOICE is an arthouse science fiction movie in progress about a woman whose voice (attached by an umbilical cord to her hindbrain) makes it possible for her travel in outer space while manic. Meanwhile, the woman in her depressed state (nicknamed La Depressa by her manic self) tries to pull herself together and back to earth. This video is my first attempt to show the "umbilical" connection.

"Affect" is a movie about manic depressive's experience of psychosis as she shops around for a therapist. Mania and a psychotic voice, which often manifests itself as clownlike, mischievous presence, continually interfere with, interrupt and sabotage the woman's attempts to communicate with therapist after therapist. The movie is composed of interwoven monologues with a scratchy, circa 1920s Blues song as a musical theme. The result is stylishly surrealistic non-linear comedy.

More focused, better storytelling, I think. I will have to think through audio levels in these layered vid.

Performed at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York in collaboration with Clio Davis, "Transparency" was an improvised live-drawing and storytelling performance featuring true anecdotes from the lives of the performers, told in a stream-of-consciousness style. The piece aimed to offer a glimpse into the performer's lives and minds in an unfiltered, unrehearsed manner. By letting their minds wander as they simultaneously drew and spoke, the performers allowed the audience, the environment and each other to influence which stories emerged. Special thanks to Rena Anakwe, Sharon De La Cruz and Shantell Martin.
