During the Brabant Open Air festival, Afterlight took the time to celebrate the (near) completion of the redeveloped industrial buildings into luxury working and living apartments in the Strijp-S area in Eindhoven. Combining a mash-up of famous (Dutch) music productions with the art of projection mapping, we transformed the ‘Gerard’ building, which stood central in this event. Taking in all aspects this area will provide in as well as literally ‘rocking’ the building to amaze viewers. We also provided architectural lightdesign” on the “Klokgebouw” and “Ketelhuis” to create a unique atmosphere during the festival. see more at www.afterlight.eu

The Italian born artist Quayola uses contemporary digital technology to tackle classic aesthetics and the universal rules for beauty and perfection. Until now he has mostly created his studies in the form of projections, installations, photography and multimedia adaptations. However, for The Sculpture Factory, which he is developing especially for MU, he is entering the realm of sculpture. The basic material is provided by none other than his great example Michelangelo: the unfinished series of four ‘Prigioni’, or ‘Captives’, made between 1513– 1534. Quayola was introduced to these images when, as a boy, he visited the Academia in Florence with his mother. By using these sculptures specifically as his inspiration, he is paying homage to one of the greatest sculptors in art history. But what is even more important to him is his focus on the process in which the material is shaped. And he is showing all: his studio, his sources, the software he has developed himself and the creativity which allows something new to arise from a work of art that has been around for centuries. In this creative cycle, the hand of the master has been largely replaced by the computer. But the artist is still at the controls. For Quayola, the subject of The Sculpture Factory is not the final sculpture, but the material. A material which is constantly mutating into endless geometrical shapes, to set eventually as a series of sculptures. From simplicity to complexity, from sharp to smooth, from abstract to figurative. The Sculpture Factory as a metaphor for the complexity of life.

CRYSTAL are hundreds of crystals of light which brighten when you touch them. People can play and share their stories of light. Artist Daan Roosegaarde calls them “Lego from Mars”. The name refers not only to its futuristic design, but also to its endless potential to play. CRYSTAL has been previously exhibited in Amsterdam, Paris, Moscow and is now permanent in Eindhoven NL. Each Crystal contains LEDs that are wirelessly charged via a magnetic floor. Once visitors start adding, moving or sharing Crystals, the basic breathing of the Crystals changes. The lighting behavior of crystals moves from ‘excited’ to ‘bored’, keeping visitors curious. The coming years different Crystal shapes and colours will be developed together with high-tech companies and cultural organisations. CRYSTAL keeps on growing.

Video by OddOne A 3-Day Masterclass during Dutch Technology Week with Aram Bartholl and David Darts June 6-8, 2012, Strijp-S, Eindhoven, NL Aram Bartholl, Dead Drop, flickr.com/photos/bartholl/5126739968/in/set-72157625142951009/ In the era of growing Internet surveillance, filtering, ACTA, 3-strikes and censorship, offline data sharing is becoming more and more important for freedom of communication. Centred around the projects Dead Drops by Aram Bartholl and PirateBox by David Darts, this masterclass aims to find more and new ways to share data in an offline mode. What is the best way to send a file to a friend? How can I store data anonymously in public space? What are the best components to build up a local offline sharing grid? Will animals play a role in the future of offline filesharing? Participants explored these questions and learned everything they need to know from Aram and David to make their own Dead Drops and PirateBoxes. They will also create their own new ideas for offline filesharing and experiment with them around the Strijp-S terrain in Eindhoven.
