“Study in Poetics,” Helen J. Bullard and Ryan Ross Smith (excerpt) Participatory Instruction Piece MAD THEORY 2: A Performance Philosophy Symposium “Study in Poetics” is a generative, durational, score-based installation. The work is a collaborative project between the composer Ryan Ross Smith (NY) and the research-based storyteller Helen J. Bullard (WI). It encourages participation from the public in creating a new and ever-changing live performance poem. This new composition written by Smith takes its notational framework from his “Study no. 47 [Lecture 3],” but uses words instead of notes, taken from Bullard’s 2015 poem “Borderlands: Between Places and Landscapes,” originally written for the Center for Culture, History and Environment (CHE).+ More details

In this first of 3 clips, Amanda is initiating a picnic theme with Matthew (she brings the basket with a small number of items into the playroom but he doesn't allow her to bring this theme in the gym), based on a big motivation he has (especially with Amanda) around the Teddy Bear Picnic. · This clip demonstrates well the importance of being prepared in our sessions with Matthew. It is clear that Amanda has prepared her theme and has many ideas about what she is going to do with it. There is still significant room and need for spontaneity and responding to what he is showing are his biggest motivations in that moment, but the theme and prepared ideas help the whole session to have cohesion. · She initiates with her theme as soon as she enters the gym. (This is very important). She appeals to one of Matthew’s biggest motivation with her (the banana song), to move towards her theme. Then she weaves the mashed potatoes. This use of a few songs and the variety she is bringing into the theme is important to keep Matthew from getting obsessed and rigid in his requests for the same thing over and over again. We want to offer him new motivations. In addition, she manages to give the session a structure. She does many different things, but always keeps the theme as the backbone of the session. It is always about the picnic. · There are several examples in this clip of effective requests that connect effectively with her theme (feeding one another and sitting in their picnic spot). · Eventually she weaves the peanut butter jelly song (which has been a significant motivation for him for awhile) and also males a request. ·+ More details

“Embarrassed of the Whole #7: an opera of operations” (excerpt) A Participatory Project by Panoply Performance Laboratory (Esther Neff and Brian McCorkle with Kaia Gilje) MAD THEORY 2: A Performance Philosophy Symposium Participants join Brian and Esther online to perform interactive exercises designing “symbolics” that communicate concepts emergent from their subjective spheres of definable conditions, contexts, and consequences, effectively building a collective philosophy of the performed moment. This workshop is one of many socially-constructive participatory processes, collectively called Embarrassed of the Whole, which is focused on experimentation with acts collectively philosophizing rather than on philosophies as functional, mimetic objects, we aim to practice and perform definition, ideation and dialectic as operational states. Beyond Performance Interview with Nick Veasey (Director's cut) This is a video interview with Nick Veasey, a British photographer working primarily with X-ray imaging. We went to visit the artist in his own laboratory, the Radar Studio, a concrete structure in the middle of nature that he built himself to contain the X-ray radiations. While showing us his work procedures, he brought us in a very intimate travel into the magic of details, discovering the working principles our everyday objects, unveiling the beauty of our everyday life. As his artist statement point out, “We live in a world obsessed with image. What we look like, what our clothes look like, houses, cars… I like to counter this obsession with superficial appearance by using x-rays to strip back the layers and show what it is like under the surface. Often the integral beauty adds intrigue to the familiar. We all make assumptions based on the external visual aspects of what surrounds us and we are attracted to people and forms that are aesthetically pleasing. I like to challenge this automatic way that we react to just physical appearance by highlighting the, often surprising, inner beauty.” He is winner of the IPA Lucie Awards, AOP, Graphis, Communication Arts, Applied Arts, PX3 and awards from the D&AD, he is also being nominated for the IPA Lucie International Photographer of the Year 2008.
